Spoilers for the ending of Smile 2. Skye Riley’s apparent escape from the hospital and trip with Gemma to reach Morris never happened as shown. She is still inside the chrysalis prop at her concert; the entity takes control of her onstage, and she dies in front of the crowd. Director Parker Finn designed that public ending as a reversal of the first film’s private finale—and as a question about celebrity, spectatorship and whether watching makes an audience complicit.
What happens at the end of Smile 2?
Skye appears to break free from the hospital, reunite with Gemma and make her way to Morris, who believes he can interrupt the curse by lowering its victim’s heart rate until they are clinically dead. The plan depends on doing this alone, so the entity cannot pass to another person.
That rescue attempt is an illusion. The film reveals that Skye is inside the chrysalis stage prop at her concert. The entity takes control onstage, and Skye dies in front of the audience. Paramount’s official listing describes the film as a horror/thriller released October 18, 2024, with a 127-minute runtime and Naomi Scott as Skye Riley: Paramount Pictures’ Smile 2 page. The final-act sequence and reveal are reconstructed in TheWrap’s interview and ending explainer.
Why does the film make the freezer plan feel real?
The hospital escape, the journey with Gemma and the freezer are presented as a possible route out, giving Skye—and the viewer—a last reason to hope. The reveal turns that hope into part of the entity’s psychological assault. Finn did not establish a fixed supernatural rule for why it takes Skye through that false path. Instead, he said he hoped viewers would consider whether the entity leads someone to a point where it can extinguish hope and fracture them before the final moment. That is an interpretation Finn invited, not a confirmed explanation of how the curse works.

What did Parker Finn say the twist means?
A public reversal of the first film
Finn told TheWrap that he knew the ending before he had worked out the rest of the story. The pop-star premise led him toward a finale that echoed the original while reversing its scale and setting: the first film ends in an isolated, dilapidated house, whereas Smile 2 ends on a concert stage before a vast crowd. Finn described the endings as “diametrically opposite.”
The movie turns the audience into spectators
Finn also said he wanted the on-screen concert crowd to seem to look through the movie screen toward viewers in the theater. He framed the moment as a question about complicity: “Wait, did we do this? Like, by us coming back and watching ‘Smile 2,’ have we done this to Skye? Are we somehow complicit?” He connected that idea to celebrity platforms and the ability of a public figure to affect many people at once. The ending is therefore not only a shock reveal; it makes the act of watching part of the film’s subject.

In a separate November 20, 2024 Moviefone interview, Finn likewise described celebrity influence as one of the ideas behind the ending. He said a future entry would need to feel fresh and worthwhile, and that the series had “a lot of interesting directions to go with.”
Does the curse infect everyone at the concert or online?
The ending implies that the curse could reach far more people than the one-to-one chain shown earlier, because Skye’s death happens before a crowd. But the film and Finn’s cited explanations do not confirm that every concertgoer becomes a host, or that people watching a livestream or social-media clip are affected. GamesRadar+’s ending explainer discusses the possibility of the curse passing through the crowd, but that is an interpretation of the ending, not a confirmed statement of its mechanics. The exact number and route of any new transmissions remain unresolved.

What is known about Smile 3?
The concert finale leaves a clear opening for another story, but Finn’s 2024 comments were conditional: he discussed possible directions and the need for a fresh approach, not a confirmed release date or plot.
Later reporting points to a project, but the details are not all settled by official confirmation. A Production List / Film & Television Industry Alliance listing, updated April 28, 2026, labels Smile 3 “In Post-Production,” gives a January 2025 shoot date and names Finn as writer and director. A March 9, 2026 ComingSoon report, attributing its information to Dread Central and Jeff Sneider, says a third film is in the works but suggests Finn may not return. Those accounts conflict about his involvement. The sources cited here do not include confirmation from Paramount or Finn of the production status, director, cast, release date or story, so none of those details should be treated as officially settled.
