Sylvester Stewart, the singer, songwriter and bandleader known as Sly Stone, died on June 9, 2025, at 82. His family said he had battled COPD and other underlying health issues. As the leader of Sly and the Family Stone, he helped make a radically mixed, multi-genre sound part of mainstream American music.

Who was Sly Stone?

Born Sylvester Stewart, Sly Stone became the force at the center of Sly and the Family Stone, a group formed in 1966–67. The band’s identity was musical and social at once: the Associated Press describes it as the first major group to include Black and white men and women. Its members’ voices and instruments came together in a sound that crossed the boundaries between funk, soul, rock, gospel, jazz, doo-wop, Latin music and psychedelia.

That breadth was not an ornament around a conventional pop group. It was the group’s method. Songs could shift between a communal singalong, a sharp rhythmic groove and a more searching or unsettling mood, often without losing their immediacy. The result helped define popular funk and the meeting point of soul and rock.

What songs are a good place to start?

There is no single required starting point. These songs trace the band’s movement from exuberant, communal hits to a darker late-period sound:

  • “Dance to the Music” — the breakthrough single and an inviting introduction to the band’s call-and-response energy.
  • “Everyday People” — a bright, accessible expression of the group’s inclusive outlook; the official site identifies it as one of the band’s career-defining No. 1 pop and R&B hits.
  • “I Want to Take You Higher” — a performance-minded, escalating song that captures the band’s drive.
  • “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” — another career-defining No. 1 pop and R&B hit, with a title that turns a playful phrase into a signature.
  • “Family Affair” — a measured, shadowed entry point into the group’s later, more austere period; the official site also identifies it as a career-defining No. 1 pop and R&B hit.

Which albums show the band’s range?

Stand! (1969)

Stand! represents the group’s bright, expansive hit-making era. It is a strong album-length companion to songs such as “Everyday People” and “I Want to Take You Higher,” bringing the band’s collective energy into a broader statement.

There’s a Riot Goin’ On (1971)

Two years later, There’s a Riot Goin’ On offered a darker, denser contrast. The AP describes it as among the grimmest and most uncompromising chart-topping albums. “Family Affair” provides a concise way into its less celebratory atmosphere.

The Associated Press reports that Sly and the Family Stone had five top-10 singles, including three No. 1 singles, and three million-selling albums: Stand!, There’s a Riot Goin’ On and Greatest Hits. The group was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Why was Sly and the Family Stone important?

The band made integration and gender inclusion visible within a major group at a time when that was unusual, while its music refused to stay inside a single genre. Its blend of funk, soul, rock, gospel and psychedelia carried a sense of shared participation, but the songs could also register tension and disillusionment. That combination gave the group a lasting influence beyond any one hit or era.

The band’s public message could be direct. Before its 1968 Ed Sullivan Show set, Stone recited a passage from “Are You Ready”: “Don’t hate the Black, don’t hate the white, if you get bitten, just hate the bite.” At the group’s 1993 Hall of Fame induction, George Clinton called them “a brief glimpse of utopia.” Both lines point to the idealism associated with the group, even as its later music complicated any easy picture of harmony.
