Russell Crowe said he felt “slightly uncomfortable” about Gladiator II because Maximus is dead and Crowe had no say in how the story continued. He also said some things he had heard about the sequel did not fit the character’s moral journey.
Why Crowe felt uncomfortable about Gladiator II
In a June 12, 2024 interview with Kyle Meredith, discussed by The Hollywood Reporter, Crowe explained that Maximus’s death left him outside the sequel’s creative decisions. The outlet’s video description attributes this remark to him: “I’m slightly uncomfortable with the fact they’re making another one – because, of course, I’m dead and I have no say in what gets done.”

Crowe also objected to some story details he had heard, saying: “No, no, no, that’s not in the moral journey of that particular character.” He was describing his understanding of reported elements, not setting out a full account of the sequel’s plot.
What the sequel is about
Crowe played Maximus in the original Gladiator (2000). The belated follow-up does not feature him, according to The Guardian. Paramount Global Content describes Gladiator II as a sequel centered on a former general forced to live as a common gladiator under Roman rule: Paramount Global Content’s film page.

That official premise is distinct from Crowe’s comments: his concern was about information he had heard and whether it suited Maximus, rather than a critique of the sequel’s finished story.
The original film’s place in Crowe’s life
Crowe has also reflected on what making Gladiator meant for his career. The Guardian reported that he thought about his age at the time and the doors the film opened for him. Variety reported that those reflections came with a tinge of melancholy and jealousy about the new film.
Rank #2
- From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome.
His remarks were not a review of the released film
The comments at issue came in the context of an interview about a sequel that was then upcoming. They establish Crowe’s unease about losing influence over Maximus’s story and his reaction to some details he had heard; they do not establish that he had watched or assessed the released Gladiator II.
