This is an editorial ranking of the Slam Dunk manga’s characters—not an official list or a ranking of the best basketball players. The order weighs character growth, narrative impact, personality and relationships, and pivotal contributions on the court. The official sources establish the central Shohoku cast, but they do not publish a top ten; the placements below are interpretive.

Spoiler note: The ranking refers to manga character arcs and important game moments, including developments later in the story.

10. Kiminobu Kogure

Kogure earns a place because he gives Shohoku a quieter kind of leadership. He is not the team’s imposing captain or its headline scorer, but his steadiness helps hold together a group driven by stronger personalities. His loyalty to Akagi and belief in the team make him a valuable counterweight to the louder players.

9. Coach Mitsuyoshi Anzai

Anzai’s patient, measured presence gives Shohoku an adult who can see more in its players than they see in themselves. His history with Mitsui adds emotional weight to his role as coach, while his calm guidance helps the team withstand pressure. He is less a constant source of action than the person whose trust can change what a player believes is possible.

8. Hanamichi Sakuragi

Sakuragi begins as a rough newcomer with little knowledge of basketball, drawn toward the sport after meeting Haruko. VIZ’s official series page frames that beginning as the story of a hot-blooded delinquent entering Shohoku’s basketball world. His growth from an impulsive show-off into a player willing to work, learn, and contribute makes him central to the manga’s appeal. He is not ranked first because the list weighs the full cast’s writing and influence, not just the protagonist’s transformation.

7. Takenori Akagi

Akagi is Shohoku’s captain, a third-year center, and the player whose goal of winning the national championship gives the team its long-term ambition. The official character page states that championship goal directly. His severity can make him seem distant, but it comes from years of carrying a dream that others have not yet shared. Sakuragi’s nickname for him, “Gori (Gorilla),” adds comedy without diminishing Akagi’s stature as the team’s foundation.

6. Kaede Rukawa

Rukawa’s exceptional talent and reserve make him an effective foil for Sakuragi: one is a natural scorer who says little, the other an untested beginner who cannot stop talking. Their rivalry gives Shohoku’s internal dynamics a persistent spark. Rukawa’s place here reflects how much his skill and stubborn ambition shape the team’s identity, even when his emotional development is less conspicuous than that of several characters ranked above him.

5. Ryota Miyagi

Miyagi brings speed, nerve, and a sharp point guard’s perspective to Shohoku. The official character page identifies him as a second-year point guard, lists his height as 168 cm (5’6″), and calls him “Shohoku’s Speedster.” His quickness is not merely a physical attribute: he has to read the floor, make decisions, and direct play under pressure. His crush on manager Ayako supplies a lighter thread in his character without defining his role on the court.

4. Hisashi Mitsui

Mitsui’s return to basketball gives the series one of its most affecting stories of lost time and renewed purpose. Once a gifted player, he spends years away from the game before his past and his connection to the team pull him back. That history makes his later determination feel earned rather than effortless. He is also a reminder that a character’s importance can come from the cost of returning, not only from what he can do with the ball.

3. Shinichi Maki

Maki stands out among Shohoku’s rivals because he combines authority with control. His presence makes the opposing team feel composed and formidable, not simply like an obstacle waiting for Shohoku to overcome. As a leader and a powerful guard, he tests Shohoku’s confidence as well as its tactics. His restraint is part of the appeal: he does not need to dominate every moment to command attention.

2. Kaede Rukawa’s rival: Akira Sendoh

Sendoh’s relaxed manner contrasts with his ability to take charge when a game demands it. That combination makes him an unusually engaging opponent: he can be personable without losing his competitive edge, and his play forces Shohoku’s stars to confront a different kind of excellence. His relationship to Rukawa also gives the rivalry a personal dimension. Sendoh ranks near the top because he is memorable both as a player and as a presence who expands the series beyond Shohoku.

1. Hanamichi Sakuragi

Sakuragi takes the top spot for the way his growth makes the manga’s basketball story emotionally legible. His early bravado produces comedy, but the story gradually gives that energy purpose: he learns to practice, accept instruction, and recognize the value of his teammates. The shift does not erase his ridiculousness; it gives it something meaningful to push against. His development, narrative centrality, and capacity to change the people around him outweigh any simple measure of basketball skill.

Why this is a character ranking, not a player ranking

Several players could be ranked differently if the only question were who is best on the court. This list instead considers how each character changes the story and how distinctly they are drawn. The five Shohoku players named in the official film synopsis—Miyagi, Sakuragi, Rukawa, Akagi, and Mitsui—form the team’s central core, with the reigning champions Sannoh Kogyo setting the national-stage challenge (official film synopsis). The manga remains the basis for this ranking; the film and anime are adaptations rather than the measure used to settle placements.

For readers who want to follow the story from the beginning, VIZ presents Takehiko Inoue’s original Slam Dunk manga and its first volume. The TV anime is a separate adaptation: Toei lists its broadcast run as October 16, 1993, to March 23, 1996, across 101 episodes (Toei’s series listing).
