These six nonfiction books approach India through sharply different lenses: early American encounters with the country, a Gujarati writer’s autobiography, post-Independence history, Hyderabad’s community memories, a family’s Partition displacement, and relationships in contemporary India. They offer distinct entry points, not a complete picture of a country too varied for any six-book list to represent.
Six books, six different ways into the subject
The descriptions below follow Scroll Staff’s reading list, published April 5, 2025. The list says its information was sourced from publishers; the summaries here describe how the books are presented there, rather than offering independent reviews. The books also differ in form: the selection includes historical narrative, autobiography, memoir, oral-history-based social history and a practical relationship guide.
Wanderers, Adventurers, Missionaries: Early Americans in India — Anuradha Kumar
Kumar’s book follows Americans who came to India from the 1700s onward as traders, missionaries, reformers, writers and artists. Its subjects include the American ice trade, medical missionaries, and the Stokes and Alter families. It is a route into the history of contact between India and the United States, told through people and specific encounters.
My Truth: Autobiography of Narmadashankar Dave — translated from Gujarati by Abhijit Kothari
Originally titled Mari Hakikat, this autobiography brings together diary writing, reflection and poetry to document an early period in the life of Gujarati writer Narmadashankar Dave. Readers drawn to personal testimony and literary self-portraiture may find this the most intimate entry in the selection.

How to choose a starting point
- For early transnational history: start with Kumar’s account of Americans in India.
- For autobiography and Gujarati literary life: choose Dave’s My Truth.
- For a personal perspective on independent India: Gandhi’s book joins memoir to public history.
- For Hyderabad through residents’ memories: Majid’s oral-history-based account is the most community-centered choice.
- For Partition and family displacement: Somaaya’s memoir follows one family’s move from Karachi to Kutch and Bombay.
- For practical questions about polyamory: Ghosh’s book addresses communication, boundaries and everyday arrangements.
These books are not interchangeable: they move across periods, places and forms of experience, and range from historical accounts to a relationship guide. Read them as focused perspectives on parts of India’s changing social and cultural life, rather than as a survey of the whole country.
