Cedar Fair and the former Six Flags combined on July 1, 2024. Knott’s Berry Farm is part of the resulting portfolio, alongside destinations across the United States, Mexico and Canada. The deal brought the parent operators together; it did not merge Knott’s and Six Flags Magic Mountain into one park.
What merged—and what did not?
Cedar Fair and the former Six Flags completed their merger effective July 1, 2024. The combined company took the name Six Flags Entertainment Corporation and trades on the New York Stock Exchange as FUN. Knott’s Berry Farm is therefore part of the combined company’s portfolio, as is Magic Mountain, but both remain distinct parks with their own identities and operations.
The companies described the transaction publicly as a “merger of equals.” For accounting purposes, however, Cedar Fair was treated as the acquirer and predecessor. Those descriptions refer to different things: the public framing of the transaction and its accounting treatment.
At closing, former Cedar Fair unitholders received one share of the combined company for each unit, while former Six Flags shareholders received 0.5800 shares for each share. Former Cedar Fair holders owned approximately 51.2% of the combined company immediately after closing, compared with approximately 48.8% for former Six Flags shareholders, according to the company’s 2026 Form 10-Q.

Why the deal could make a stronger park operator
The merger joined two large regional-park portfolios under one operator. In its 2025 Form 10-K, Six Flags described the intended benefits as a broader, more diversified property portfolio; an improved guest experience by using the companies’ complementary operating capabilities; and an opportunity to accelerate investment by combining cash flows. Those are the company’s stated aims, not evidence by themselves that the benefits have been delivered.
Scale may give an operator more choices: it can draw on capabilities across a wider portfolio, weigh investment priorities across more destinations, and spread exposure across different locations. The company’s 2025 Form 10-K described a portfolio of 26 amusement parks, 15 separately gated water parks and nine resorts. It reported that 37 of its 41 amusement and water parks were in the United States, two in Mexico and two in Canada.

That footprint is the basis for the “superpower” argument: the combined operator has substantial geographic reach and a mix of parks, water parks and resorts. But a big portfolio is an opportunity, not a guarantee of better rides, shorter lines, cleaner facilities or more satisfying visits. Those outcomes depend on decisions and execution at individual properties.
What the merger means for Knott’s Berry Farm
For Knott’s, the direct change is ownership: its parent operator became part of Six Flags Entertainment Corporation. The corporate sources establish that ownership change and describe company-wide goals, but they do not establish a uniform change to the Knott’s guest experience as a result of the merger. A visitor should not assume that every policy, attraction plan or operating practice changed simply because the parent companies combined.

Knott’s also sits within a much larger story than a comparison with Magic Mountain. The merger brought together broad portfolios of regional destinations. The challenge is to use that reach without losing sight of what makes a particular park distinctive to its local visitors.
Portfolio counts are changing
Park totals depend on the date and source. The 2025 Form 10-K’s year-end description lists 26 amusement parks and 15 separately gated water parks, as well as nine resorts. In a later 2026 announcement, Six Flags said it had entered definitive agreements to sell seven parks to EPR Properties and described a more focused collection of 34 parks after the transition. The company said the parks would operate normally through the 2026 season; it named Enchanted Parks as operator for six U.S. properties and La Ronde Operations, Inc. for La Ronde.

The seven parks named in that announcement are Michigan’s Adventure, Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston, Six Flags Great Escape, Six Flags La Ronde, Six Flags St. Louis, Valleyfair and Worlds of Fun. The announcement describes agreements and a planned transition, so those details should not be read as proof that every transfer has already been completed. These later plans are separate from the July 2024 merger.
Six Flags’ investor-relations overview displayed a different snapshot in 2026: 20 amusement parks, 14 water parks and nine resort properties, including an amusement park in Saudi Arabia. Those figures use categories and an update schedule that do not match the 2025 filing’s portfolio description. They should not be combined into a single total or treated as a fully reconciled post-sale count.

What could keep scale from translating into success?
Seasonality and weather
Theme parks depend heavily on a limited part of the calendar. Six Flags reported in its 2025 Form 10-K that approximately 70% of annual attendance and revenue occurred in the second and third quarters of that year. The company also said adverse weather—including storms, high winds, wildfires and excessive heat—negatively affected attendance in 2025. A wider geographic footprint can reduce reliance on conditions in any one area, but it cannot remove weather risk or the seasonal nature of the business.
Competition for guests’ time and spending
The company identifies competition for discretionary spending and leisure time as a business risk. Park choice depends on more than a famous coaster: location, price, ride and attraction quality, atmosphere, cleanliness, food and entertainment all matter. A large operator still has to give people a compelling reason to choose each park and return.
Capital, maintenance and ride uptime
Attractions require ongoing investment, and the company’s filing notes that adding rides can involve construction delays. Ride downtime or closures can also hurt revenue. A combined portfolio may create more options for allocating capital, but it also leaves management responsible for expensive assets across varied local markets. The strategic question is not just how much the company can invest, but whether it invests well and keeps existing attractions dependable.
How to judge whether the “superpower” thesis is becoming real
The merger’s potential is best judged by results rather than by the size of the combined name or portfolio. Useful signs would include evidence that investment improves individual parks, that attractions remain available, and that the guest experience earns repeat visits. The cited company materials set out strategic objectives and business risks; they do not, on their own, demonstrate merger-driven gains in attendance, guest satisfaction or cost savings.

The company’s reach gives it room to pursue the promised benefits. Delivering them park by park is the harder test.
