Six Flags America and its companion water park, Hurricane Harbor, are closed. Six Flags named November 2, 2025, as the amusement park’s final operating day; WTOP reported that it closed that day. The closure ended the park’s Six Flags-branded era, not the site’s longer history as an attraction.
Why did Six Flags America close?
Six Flags Entertainment Corporation announced on May 1, 2025, that it would close Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor after the 2025 season. The company said a review of its park portfolio found that the Bowie, Maryland, parks did not fit its long-term growth plan. It said marketing the property for redevelopment would generate the highest value and return on investment, and that it had engaged CBRE to market the site. Six Flags’ May 1, 2025, announcement described the property as approximately 500 acres.
That is the company’s stated rationale. The cited materials do not establish poor attendance, a park-level operating loss, or maintenance problems as independent causes. Six Flags later said its planned disposal shortened the estimated useful life of remaining property and equipment, leading it to expect about $19 million in additional depreciation expense in 2025. That accounting estimate does not show that the expense caused the closure. Six Flags’ 2025 third-quarter filing
What happened to employees and tickets?
Six Flags said approximately 70 full-time associates worked at the park and that eligible associates would receive severance and other benefits. Prince George’s County also cited approximately 70 full-time associates and pointed to other job opportunities, but the cited sources do not quantify seasonal or indirect employment impacts. Six Flags said 2025 season passes and tickets would be honored through the parks’ final operating season; that offer applied to that season, not later passes. Six Flags’ May 1, 2025, announcement

What does “after 25 years” mean?
The phrase refers roughly to the period when the attraction operated as Six Flags America, beginning in 1999. It does not describe the site’s full amusement-park history. WTOP traces earlier versions to a drive-through wildlife preserve opened in 1974, followed by attractions known as Wild Country and Wild World, then Adventure World before the Six Flags America name. The Associated Press reported that the park had nine roller coasters, including The Wild One, when the closure was announced. WTOP · Associated Press

What will replace Six Flags America?
Redevelopment is in planning, but no final list of uses, tenants, or attractions is established in the cited materials. Six Flags disclosed in an April 8, 2026, filing that a subsidiary had entered a purchase agreement for certain Prince George’s County real property with a joint venture between 35V, co-founded by Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman, and Atlanta-based TPA Group. The agreement was subject to buyer diligence and other closing conditions. Six Flags said it expected to use net proceeds to pay down debt. Six Flags’ April 8, 2026, filing
A June 2026 update from Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation describes the joint venture as future stewards of the former site and reports a community vision panel for a 515-acre property. Concepts discussed include entertainment, dining, education, health and wellness, housing, and innovation. The county’s figure differs from Six Flags’ earlier approximately 500-acre description; both are attributed estimates from their respective sources. These concepts are possibilities, not confirmed tenants or approved uses. Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation’s update

What is the project’s status?
The Central Avenue Redevelopment project website lists community feedback and naming steps as open, with master planning ahead and tenant announcements pending. The county envisions implementation in phases over the coming decade, which is a planning horizon rather than a committed construction schedule. The available sources do not confirm that a new amusement park will open. Central Avenue Redevelopment project website
Prince George’s County’s August 2025 statement described the property as seasonally operated and argued that only part of its land was used, characterizing the site as underused economically. That is the county’s view, not an independently established measure of the park’s performance. The county has framed redevelopment goals around year-round economic activity, jobs, and community benefit; Six Flags framed its decision around portfolio strategy and property value.
