Nate Fisher’s death, three episodes before the Six Feet Under finale, shifts the series from following its original guide into the Fisher family’s world to tracing the people left behind. Creator Alan Ball described Nate as “our way into this world” and Claire as “our way out of it”—a concise explanation of why Nate’s death changes the final season’s direction.
Which death does the title mean?
It means Nate Fisher, played by Peter Krause—not his father, Nathaniel Fisher Sr., whose sudden death opens the series. In the final season, Nate dies with three episodes remaining before the finale. The season’s closing death card names him as “Nathaniel Samuel Fisher Jr., 1965–2005,” as recounted by Netflix Tudum’s season-five recap.
Contemporary Los Angeles Times coverage called the decision to kill Nate with three episodes left the season’s most shocking twist. That supports describing it as a major shock, but not as an objectively proven audience-wide ranking of the show’s deaths.
Why Nate’s death changes the story’s center
Six Feet Under begins with Nathaniel Sr.’s death and follows the family and its funeral-home business. Death is not only the show’s subject; it is the event that brings the Fishers’ private conflicts into view. In a Directors Guild of America interview, Ball explained the show’s changing point of view: “When the show started, Nate was our way into this world, and Claire became our way out of it.” Nate initially gives viewers a route into the family’s unfamiliar routines and history. Once he is gone, the closing stretch has to look outward from the people who remain rather than rely on him as its central guide.
How Claire becomes the route to the finale
The shift points toward Claire’s departure and the finale’s movement beyond the Fisher home. The connection is an interpretation of Ball’s description alongside reporting on the ending, not a claim that he said Nate’s death alone dictated the finale’s form. That makes Nate’s death pivotal in a structural sense as well as an emotional one: the series loses the character who first carried viewers into its world, then moves toward the character Ball identified as its way out. The story’s focus turns from Nate’s place in the family to the lives and departures of those who survive him.

Nathaniel Sr.’s death launches the premise: Nate returns to the family business, and the audience enters the Fisher household with him. Nate’s death comes near the end, after the audience already knows that world. The two deaths therefore frame the series differently—one opens the family story; the other helps redirect its final movement toward Claire and the conclusion.
