Sita Ramam has the ingredients of an affecting period romance: Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur at its center, a letter linking two people, and Afreen’s search to uncover their story. But at roughly 163 minutes, its layered storytelling can test the patience of viewers who want the central relationship to stay in focus. Whether the emotional payoff earns that length is the key question.
What is Sita Ramam about?
Directed by Hanu Raghavapudi, Sita Ramam uses an old letter as the link between a romance and a later investigation. Ram writes to Sita; Afreen’s journey to find Ram gradually reveals the story behind the letter and the couple. That framing gives the film a mystery to unwind alongside its love story. Prime Video’s synopsis emphasizes Afreen’s search, while Lyca Productions’ synopsis describes the task of delivering Ram’s letter to Sita.

Dulquer Salmaan and Mrunal Thakur lead the romance, with Rashmika Mandanna also among the cast, according to Apple TV and Prime Video. The structure offers scope for emotion and discovery, but it also means the film must keep its investigation and supporting characters from crowding out Ram and Sita.
Does the romance work?
There is real appeal in the central pairing. In her Scroll review, published 2 September 2022, Nandini Ramnath credits the film with lovely scenes between Ram and Sita, moments of poignancy, and Dulquer Salmaan’s charisma. Her criticism is not that the romance lacks charm; it is that the film’s structure and duration gradually dilute its effect.

Janani K’s India Today review, published 5 August 2022, offers a complementary assessment: it describes the film as a moving tale of unconditional love, while judging that it falls short of becoming a masterpiece and leans heavily on its lead performers. Taken together, these are two critics’ responses, not a universal verdict. They suggest the leads and the emotional premise are central to the film’s success, even as the execution has limits.
Why might it feel overlong?
Apple TV lists the film at 2 hours 43 minutes; Scroll describes it as 163 minutes. Those figures are close, though they come from different sources. Ramnath’s pacing objection is specific: she finds that the central conceit weakens after the interval, that supporting characters and cameos distract from the main relationship, and that important information is withheld until late. The cumulative effect, in her view, is a romance stretched by its own plotting.

That makes “overstays its welcome” a critical judgment rather than an objective property of the film. Viewers who enjoy gradual revelations and a wide supporting cast may be more receptive to the detours. Those chiefly invested in Ram and Sita may feel the story loses momentum when it shifts attention away from them. Ramnath also praises Vishal Chandrashekhar’s songs, which contribute to the film’s romantic appeal even as she questions its balance.

It is a reasonable choice if you want an expansive period love story and are willing to spend close to three hours with its mystery-frame structure. The strongest case for watching is the combination of the leads, the poignant moments noted by Ramnath, and the emotional premise recognized by India Today’s Janani K. The main reservation is equally clear: the investigation, cameos, and delayed revelations may make the romance feel less focused than its premise promises.

Go in expecting an earnest, sometimes moving romance rather than a tightly paced one. If you prefer a story to keep its central couple in the foreground and reveal information briskly, the length and narrative detours may outweigh the film’s charms.
