The wedding-dress disagreement on Sister Wives was about more than Kody Brown accompanying Robyn Brown while she chose a dress: in a 2023 televised retrospective, the cast revisited what his involvement meant, why it had been kept quiet, and how it compared with Christine Brown’s experience. Their accounts differ, so the segment records a dispute about perceived unequal attention—not independent proof of favoritism.
What the wedding-dress dispute was about
A People exclusive syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment on December 20, 2023 previewed a segment of Sister Wives Look Back: How It Started. In the archival footage discussed in the report, Kody recalled going with Robyn to look at wedding dresses and liking the dress she ultimately selected. The wives objected to the significance of his participation—and to learning about it later.
The disagreement became a retrospective comparison: Christine said Kody had not cared what she wore for their wedding, while Kody said he wanted to be involved in Robyn’s choice. Robyn, in turn, said she made the final decision and had asked Kody not to disclose his input to the other wives.
How each cast member described the incident
Kody said he wanted to take part in Robyn’s choice
Kody said he wanted to be involved when Robyn chose her dress. He characterized Christine’s reaction as irrational jealousy and said of his relationship with her at the time: “the problem with the whole experience that I had with Christine was I didn’t really want to be married to her.” The retrospective presents his explanation and his description of Christine’s reaction; it does not independently establish either person’s motives.

Christine saw a contrast with her own wedding
Christine said Kody had not cared what she wore when they married. She said the revelation made her realize that he had been more in love with Robyn than he had been with her at the time of their wedding. In the exchange, she also told Kody: “It wasn’t funny, you looked like an idiot.” Her account frames the dress episode as a painful contrast in attention and affection.
Janelle raised favoritism as a possibility
Janelle criticized Kody’s conduct, calling it a “d— move,” and wondered whether the incident marked the beginning of favoritism: “But maybe that was the beginning of some shows of favoritism. I have no idea.” Her wording is explicitly tentative; it is her interpretation, not a finding established by the segment.

Robyn said she made the final choice and kept Kody’s input private
Robyn said she made the final dress choice and had asked Kody not to tell the other wives about his involvement. She explained: “I didn’t feel it was necessary for you guys to know that.” Her account helps explain why the others learned about the outing later, while leaving the disagreement over its significance unresolved.
What the retrospective does—and does not—establish
- It documents conflicting accounts from the cast about Kody’s involvement in Robyn’s dress choice and what that involvement meant.
- Christine described unequal attention by comparing Robyn’s dress selection with her own wedding experience; Janelle suggested the incident might indicate favoritism.
- Robyn said she made the final choice and asked Kody to keep his input private. Kody said he wanted to participate and characterized Christine’s response as jealousy.
- The report does not independently verify the cast members’ motives or establish a broader pattern of favoritism. That framing belongs to the participants’ interpretations and the story’s headline.
When the special was discussed
The Yahoo Entertainment report was published December 20, 2023, and said the Look Back preview was for the following Sunday. The retrieved report did not name a season or episode number. Its relationship-status references are also historical: it described Christine leaving in November 2021, Janelle’s separation being revealed in December 2022, and Meri’s relationship ending being confirmed in January, as reported in 2023. Those details should not be read as a current status update.
