It begins with the unease of a new arranged marriage in Mumbai, then veers into surreal, macabre comedy. That unruly turn is the film’s great pleasure—and, at times, its weakness: its images and ideas don’t always settle into a satisfying whole.
A new marriage, and a life that doesn’t fit
Uma (Radhika Apte) and Gopal (Ashok Pathak) are newly married and beginning life together in a cramped Mumbai home. Their awkwardness is immediate. Gopal is shy and withdrawn; Uma seems ill at ease with the domestic role that has been assigned to her, and everyday routines do not come naturally.

Kandhari makes this strained beginning feel less like a conventional romantic or family drama than a pressure chamber. The couple are alone together, as the official synopsis puts it, but closeness does not arrive simply because they share a home. Uma’s frustration and isolation gradually tilt the film into uncanny territory. Animalistic urges, hallucinations or strange creatures, and stop-motion imagery disrupt the ordinary domestic setting.
It is best to approach the film as surreal dark comedy, or black-comic horror, rather than expect a straightforward horror story or social-realist account of marriage. Its arranged-marriage premise invites a satirical reading, but the film’s oddness is not reducible to one argument about custom or gender. It is interested in discomfort, mismatched expectations and the strangeness of trying to inhabit a life that other people seem to consider normal.

Apte makes Uma impossible to ignore
The film’s most reliable source of momentum is Apte. With dialogue often sparse, she gives Uma an entire vocabulary of looks, movements and physical reactions. Her comic timing can make a small gesture feel like a refusal, a provocation or a private joke. Wendy Ide and Peter Bradshaw, reviewing for The Guardian, both singled out Apte’s performance; Ide particularly praised its expressive physical comedy.
That physicality keeps Uma from becoming merely a symbol of rebellion. She is volatile, awkward and sometimes alarming, but also recognizably inexperienced and lonely. Apte makes the character’s difficulty with domestic expectations legible without smoothing away her rough edges. The performance also gives the film a human center as its images become less predictable.
A film that keeps changing its rules
Kandhari’s style is deliberately conspicuous. Frontal compositions and saturated color give the domestic scenes a staged, slightly unreal quality, while abrupt tonal shifts keep the viewer from settling into one genre. The film was shot on 35mm, and its visual texture suits a story that moves from everyday discomfort toward the grotesque. Stop-motion animal figures add another layer of handmade strangeness rather than the polished effects language of a conventional creature feature.
The sound world contributes to that unruliness. The score is by Paul Banks, and the soundtrack ranges across artists including Howlin’ Wolf, Motörhead, Buddy Holly, Blind Willie Johnson, and Iggy Pop and the Stooges. The mix of musical references mirrors the film’s refusal to stay in one emotional register.

These choices are often invigorating, particularly when Apte’s performance and the formal invention work in tandem. But eccentricity has its own risk: vivid framing, unusual imagery and sudden turns can begin to feel emphatic for their own sake. Ide embraces the film’s rule-breaking while acknowledging that not every big swing lands. Bradshaw likewise finds it engaging and stylish, but feels it runs out of road before the end and leaves its point unresolved. That disagreement gets at the experience: the film’s nerve is easy to admire, even when its accumulation of ideas feels less coherent than its individual moments.
What the film means—and what it leaves open
Some viewers will read Uma’s new marriage and resistance to expected domestic behavior as feminist satire. Kandhari has resisted treating the film as a message with one clear agenda. In an interview with The Guardian, he said, “I’m happy people can see the film like that, but I didn’t set out to make something with an agenda. I would say the film is actually punk rock because it questions things that don’t make sense.” That is the director’s framing, not a final answer that closes off other readings.

He also described the film as “a meditation on inexperience, on being inherently strange and not really knowing how to handle it or be at peace with it.” That emphasis helps explain why Uma’s transformation feels less like a tidy metaphor than a rupture in a life already out of joint. The premise can support social satire, but Kandhari’s account places loneliness and misfit identity closer to the story’s center. The Indian Express interview describes Uma as misunderstood and a misfit who finds people who do not judge her.
The film’s festival history reflects its art-house ambitions: the BFI lists Cannes, Directors’ Fortnight, the BFI London Film Festival and Zurich among its festival highlights. The Guardian reported four British Independent Film Award nominations and a BAFTA nomination for outstanding debut in 2025; these were nominations, not wins.

Who should watch Sister Midnight?
Choose Sister Midnight if you like performances that take physical risks, dark comedy that can turn unsettling, and films more interested in inventing their own rules than delivering a neat genre payoff. Apte is a compelling reason to stay with it, and Kandhari’s best visual ideas linger.
If you want a tightly resolved story, a conventional horror build or a single clear thesis about marriage, the film may frustrate you. Its central gamble is that volatile performance and stylistic invention can carry a story that keeps slipping between comic, grotesque and socially observant modes. Often they can; not every turn lands. The film is most rewarding when you can enjoy that uncertainty without requiring it to resolve into one explanation.
