Spoilers for the full film and both credits scenes. Remmick is an Irish vampire who comes to 1932 Mississippi seeking entry to Smoke and Stack’s juke joint. He recognizes the pain of oppression, but his sympathy does not make him a liberator: he manipulates the survivors and wants to take advantage of Sammie’s extraordinary musical gift. The film’s invitation rule makes trust a vulnerability, while its ending confirms that Stack survives and refuses immortality when he reunites with Sammie decades later.
Who is Remmick in Sinners?
Remmick is the film’s central vampire antagonist. He arrives in the Mississippi town where twin brothers Smoke and Stack have opened a juke joint, a gathering place that soon becomes a target. The story sets supernatural horror against the dangers of Jim Crow-era Mississippi; the Directors Guild of America describes the film as a fusion of gothic horror and 1930s Mississippi history (DGA Q&A; see also the official synopsis).

The film identifies Remmick as Irish and shows him as a vampire, but it does not establish a complete human biography. It gives no reliable basis for a precise birth date, age, conversion story, or detailed account of his life before becoming a vampire. Those gaps matter: his ideas and motives can be discussed without inventing a backstory the film does not provide.
What does Ryan Coogler say about Remmick’s past and perspective?
Writer-director Ryan Coogler described his vampires as human-adjacent beings who were human at some point and whose long lives can give them perspective on society. In an interview with VPM/NPR’s Fresh Air, he said: “But for me, the vampire was a creature who’s, like, human-adjacent – who was human at some point, you know, became something else. But through their advanced age, they could see society for what it was.” (VPM/NPR interview.)

Coogler also said Remmick identifies with the Black characters’ experience of subjugation. He connected that perspective to the complicated histories of Irish and African American people in the United States, while recognizing the fraught history of Irish assimilation into whiteness. These are Coogler’s stated creative ideas, not evidence of an exhaustive personal history for Remmick.
Why does Remmick want Sammie?
Sammie is a gifted blues musician whose performance draws the vampires. Within the film’s story world, music can reach across the boundary between the living and the dead, strengthen or heal a community, and attract supernatural danger. TIME describes this as part of the film’s musical legend; it is a fictional premise, not a claim about real-world music or folklore (TIME’s ending and credits-scene explanation).

Remmick presents recruitment as a route to freedom and equality, but his offer conceals a predatory purpose: he wants to co-opt Sammie’s music. Coogler’s comments help explain why Remmick can recognize oppression, while the plot shows that recognition does not stop him from exploiting other people. The contrast is central to the character: he speaks to a genuine grievance while pursuing power through manipulation.
Coogler has also discussed the history of Black music being classified and marketed differently from similar music by white performers (The Atlantic interview). Read alongside Remmick’s attempt to take Sammie’s gift, that context supports an interpretation of the vampire plot as a story about cultural appropriation as well as physical threat. That is an interpretation of the film, rather than a separate supernatural rule.

What are the vampire rules in Sinners?
They need an invitation to enter
The vampires cannot simply cross the juke joint’s threshold; they need an invitation. That protection depends on people maintaining the boundary, however. Mary’s return after being turned shows how a personal relationship can undermine the apparent safety of the rule: someone trusted may be able to persuade people inside to let her in (TIME).
Music draws them toward Sammie
Sammie’s performance is more than entertainment in the film’s supernatural logic. His gift attracts the vampires, making the juke joint’s music a source of communal connection and a beacon to danger at once (TIME).

How does Remmick’s story end, and does Stack survive?
Smoke stakes Remmick, and the vampires outside are destroyed as the sun rises. Smoke survives that confrontation but is mortally wounded later in the Ku Klux Klan attack. The mid-credits scene reveals that he spared Stack, who escaped with Mary. Roughly sixty years later, Stack and Mary visit Sammie, now a successful musician, and offer him immortality. Sammie refuses (TIME).
The credits scene gives the surviving characters a different relationship to the choice Remmick tried to sell: Stack and Mary offer Sammie a way to join them, but he chooses to remain mortal. The film therefore closes its vampire story not with a simple victory over death, but with Sammie deciding what to do with his life and music.
Quick Recap

- Director’s stated intention: Coogler sees vampires as once-human, human-adjacent beings whose age can give them insight into society.
- Interpretation: Remmick’s attempt to appropriate Sammie’s gift connects the supernatural conflict to the film’s treatment of Black music and cultural taking.
