Sinhala Aurudu is the Sinhala New Year, celebrated in Sri Lanka in mid-April alongside the Tamil New Year. Its traditional calendar framing marks the Sun’s transition from Pisces to Aries, and its customs bring together seasonal renewal, religious observance, family visits and auspicious timing. The date changes by year: in 2026, New Year Day was Tuesday, 14 April.
What does Sinhala Aurudu mean?
Sinhala Aurudu refers to the Sinhala New Year. An official educational publication gives the Sinhala name as Aluth Avurudda and the Tamil name as Puttaandu; Sri Lankan official sources commonly refer to the shared holiday as the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. The publication also uses the names “Bak Maha Ulela” and “Surya Mangallaya” for the festival.
The festival’s traditional calendar basis is the Sun’s transition from Pisces to Aries. This is an astrological and cultural framing of the New Year, not a change to the Gregorian calendar’s January 1 New Year. The Office for National Unity and Reconciliation connects the observance with Sri Lanka’s agricultural past, harvest, seasonal renewal and gratitude to nature. Those are cultural explanations offered by the publication, not a claim that every household observes the festival in the same way. Read the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation’s educational publication.
How is Sinhala Aurudu celebrated?
Customs described in the official educational account include observing the new moon, marking auspicious times, anointing oil and bathing, and visiting relatives and friends. Household observances and their timing are part of the celebration, but particular practices can differ between families and communities.

Nonagathataya, the transition between years
The customary account describes an interval between the old and new year known as nonagathataya. In this tradition, people refrain from ordinary activities and devote the interval to religious observances. Treat this as a traditional practice or belief rather than a universal rule: families and communities may observe it differently.
A shared celebration, not necessarily identical customs
Sinhala and Tamil New Year are commonly presented together in Sri Lankan official sources, with a shared mid-April holiday and broad seasonal setting. That shared context does not mean every custom is identical or practiced by everyone. The available official educational material describes customs in a joint account rather than providing a detailed comparison of Sinhala and Tamil community practices.

In his 14 April 2026 New Year message, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake framed the festival around collective ritual and religious observance, saying: “During the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, traditional customs are upheld, with priority accorded to rituals and religious observances, and activities undertaken collectively at a common auspicious time.” This is the President’s ceremonial framing, not a measurement of how every community celebrates. When is Sinhala Aurudu?
The date is year-specific, so do not assume that a date from one year applies to the next. Sri Lanka’s tourism holiday listing gives Tuesday, 14 April as Sinhala and Tamil New Year Day in 2026, with Monday, 13 April listed as the preceding holiday. The government’s 2026 desk calendar independently lists those dates. Check Sri Lanka Tourism’s 2026 public holidays or the Department of Government Printing’s 2026 desk calendar.

Sri Lanka Tourism says the mid-April New Year period brings a general pause in government, mercantile and banking sectors. This is useful for planning, but it does not guarantee that every shop, restaurant, transport service or private business will close—or remain open.
