Indian singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, known as KK, died in Kolkata on May 31, 2022, hours after performing at Nazrul Manch. He was 53. Early reports said cardiac arrest was suspected while the post-mortem was pending; later reporting on the final post-mortem described an underlying heart condition and hypoxia-related findings. Politicians, musicians and film personalities mourned him, and the West Bengal government held a gun salute in his honour.
What happened after KK’s concert in Kolkata
KK performed at Nazrul Manch on May 31, 2022. Reports said he returned to his hotel, collapsed, and was taken to the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI), where he was declared brought dead. Scroll.in’s report and NDTV’s account covered the events that night.
What reports said about the cause of death
Initial accounts described cardiac arrest as the suspected cause and noted that the post-mortem had not yet been completed. The Indian Express later reported that preliminary findings indicated cardiac arrest and that foul play had been ruled out. A June 5, 2022 report on the final post-mortem described a pathological heart condition and hypoxia-related findings following acute cardiogenic pulmonary oedema. The Indian Express report and The Times of India’s report on the final findings describe those stages of reporting.
Attendees and political figures raised questions about crowding, air conditioning and the speed of medical assistance. Contemporary accounts offered conflicting attendance estimates and differing accounts of the venue’s air conditioning; they do not establish these claims as causes of KK’s death. Questions reported at the time included why he did not go directly to a hospital and whether hotel staff had been negligent. Those were questions, not findings of proven negligence or causation. Politicians, musicians and actors paid tribute
The West Bengal government honoured KK with a gun salute at Rabindra Sadan, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid floral tribute. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi were among the political figures who expressed condolences. Musicians including Papon and Harshdeep Kaur, and actors including Akshay Kumar and R. Madhavan, also shared tributes, according to Scroll.in, NDTV and Hindustan Times.
Modi’s message, reproduced by NDTV, said: “We will always remember him through his songs.”
