TikTok’s 2024 uproar over bubble tea began with a specific pitch on Dragons’ Den: guest Dragon Simu Liu challenged Quebec company Bobba’s presentation of its ready-to-drink boba, arguing that it did not acknowledge the drink’s Taiwanese roots. The debate was about cultural recognition and who benefits from marketing a product tied to a culture—not a blanket claim that only Taiwanese people can sell bubble tea. Online criticism later escalated into harassment, which Liu condemned even as he stood by the importance of cultural education.
What happened on Dragons’ Den?
In an episode that aired October 10, 2024, Quebec City entrepreneurs Sébastien Fiset and Jess Frenette pitched Bobba, a ready-to-drink bubble tea business. Guest Dragon Liu questioned the way the founders described and branded the product, including what he saw as the absence of acknowledgment of bubble tea’s Taiwanese cultural roots. The episode and the ensuing debate were reported by The Washington Post and the Associated Press; contemporaneous coverage identifying the episode and founders also appeared at Exclaim!.
The pitch turned into a broader social-media argument about cultural appropriation, representation and the distribution of opportunity. Liu’s objection was directed at this pitch’s framing and branding. It should not be recast as a demand that people outside Taiwan never make or sell boba.
Why did Liu object to Bobba’s pitch?
The Washington Post reported Liu’s concern that Bobba’s packaging did not acknowledge boba’s Taiwanese roots. In the episode, he explained his interest in backing businesses that uplift minority entrepreneurs, saying, “I started this venture company for a lot of reasons, but really primarily to uplift minority entrepreneurs.” He questioned whether it made sense to support a business profiting from something close to his cultural heritage without recognizing that heritage.

Liu later described the aim as education rather than punishment: “let’s educate people, let’s make the world a better place, let’s make people aware that, you know, certain things aren’t okay from a cultural perspective.” The Post reported these remarks in its October 14, 2024 account; it noted the episode context, rather than presenting an independently verified transcript.
In a later LinkedIn post, Liu said he had joined the program on behalf of Markham Valley Ventures and had told producers that his primary interest was investing in minority founders. That is Liu’s own retrospective account of his intentions.

Why did the dispute spread on TikTok?
Short clips of the exchange circulated alongside commentary about cultural appropriation and who gets to profit from a product associated with another community. What began as criticism of a televised pitch became a much larger online dispute. The distinction matters: criticism of a company’s language, branding or lack of cultural acknowledgment is not the same as targeting its founders personally.
As the backlash grew, Liu asked viewers to stop death threats, harassment, bullying and dogpiling. He maintained that the cultural criticism and educational conversation mattered, while saying the founders had appeared on the show in good faith and had limited exposure to these discussions. His response was therefore two-sided: he did not retract the substance of his objection, but rejected abusive conduct toward the people involved.

What happened to Bobba and the proposed investment?
The founders apologized after the controversy. According to the Associated Press’s October 22, 2024 report, Dragon Manjit Minhas withdrew her proposed $1 million investment after reflecting on the pitch and hearing more perspectives. The figure was a proposed investment, not a completed deal. Those reports describe the immediate 2024 aftermath; they do not establish Bobba’s current business status.
The AP also reported that Twrl, an Asian American-founded boba company, drew attention after its founders posted in support of Liu. At the time, the AP said Twrl products were sold in Sprouts, selected Whole Foods markets and on Amazon. That is historical distribution information from October 2024, not confirmation of current availability.

How does bubble tea’s history fit into the argument?
Bubble tea, pearl milk tea and boba are overlapping names for a sweet tea drink associated with Taiwan. Its modern cultural identity is not the same as the history of tapioca starch. Tapioca comes from cassava, a crop that originated in South America and spread to other regions through colonial trade. The AP quoted Juily Phun, an assistant professor in Asian American Studies at Cal State LA who curated an exhibit about the beverage, on this distinction: Taiwan is associated with the development of the modern boba drink, while cassava’s history is much older and geographically broader.
Separating the ingredient’s origins from the drink’s cultural identity avoids reducing the question to where one component came from. The debate on Dragons’ Den concerned recognition of the modern drink’s Taiwanese roots and how Bobba presented its product.

What is the wider lesson for culturally rooted products?
The episode raised practical questions about how businesses describe products rooted in a cultural tradition. Megan Ruan, co-general partner of Gold House Ventures, told the AP: “The most powerful marketing for consumer products comes from personal stories and the most compelling marketing is usually very personal.” It is her observation, not a universal rule, but it points toward a useful distinction: a product’s story can explain its cultural context rather than treating that context as invisible.
- Recognition: Does the company acknowledge the community and history associated with the product?
- Framing: Does its description position the product in relation to an existing tradition accurately and respectfully?
- Representation: Who is represented among the founders and who benefits from the business?
- Criticism: Is discussion focused on the pitch and its claims, or has it turned into personal harassment?
These are ways to understand the debate, not a formal scorecard. The episode’s central tension was whether Bobba’s pitch recognized the cultural roots of the drink it was selling—and how to discuss that concern without turning criticism into abuse.
