Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens had a courthouse wedding in Houston in April 2023, then celebrated with a destination ceremony in Cabo San Lucas on May 6. The Cabo event was not a second legal marriage: Biles said they had to marry legally in the United States because their planned wedding was abroad.
Why did Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens marry twice?
The ceremonies served different purposes. Biles and Owens first married in a civil ceremony at the Harris County Courthouse in Houston. ABC News reported on April 24, 2023, that they had married over the preceding weekend. Biles later explained to Vogue: “We had to get married ‘legally’ here in the U.S. since our wedding will be a destination wedding.”
The later Cabo ceremony was the destination celebration. Calling it a wedding “again” describes the couple’s second ceremony, not a second legal marriage.
Where and when was the destination wedding?
The ceremony took place on May 6, 2023, at Nobu Los Cabos in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Vogue reported that it was held on the venue’s Umi Terrace and attended by 144 guests. The Houston Chronicle also reported the guest count and described the Cabo celebration as following the couple’s April courthouse ceremony.

What happened at the Cabo ceremony and reception?
Biles told Vogue that the ceremony began at 5 p.m. Her father escorted her down the aisle as cellist Andrew Savoia played. She recalled, “Whales were jumping out of the water as our ceremony started,” and called the occasion “the most magical!” Those details are Biles’s recollections as reported by Vogue, rather than independent confirmation of wildlife activity.
For the reception, the couple had a red velvet cake from Nobu and a Dairy Queen ice cream groom’s cake requested by Owens. The celebration continued with an after-party at Ardea Steakhouse.

Who designed Biles’s gown, and who helped plan the event?
Biles wore a gown by Galia Lahav. Carena Trampe of Amy Abbott Events planned the wedding; Biles told Vogue the planning was fun at first but became stressful, and credited Trampe with helping keep her sane. Bridesmaids wore Revelry dresses, while the groomsmen wore custom suits by Adam Ross The Suit Boss. The Houston Chronicle also identified the gown designer and reported that Owens wore a suit by Houston-based Adam Ross Leibold.
