Simon Pegg says the Mission: Impossible series has one working rule: each film has to feel bigger and more emotionally powerful than the last. In a pre-release interview, he said Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie have held to that standard, and he argued that Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning meets it. The film, the eighth in the series, opened in 2025, with the exact date depending on where you live.
What Pegg said about the franchise’s direction
Pegg’s most direct comment came in a Filmfare interview, updated May 8, 2025. He described the creative standard this way:
“Tom and McQ have always been very clear on this: for Mission: Impossible to evolve, it always needs to feel like it’s on an upward curve. It must get bigger and more moving every time. That is always the mantra: we must outdo ourselves. This time, we really have.”
The statement is a claim about intent and the filmmakers’ own bar, not a box-office or critical measure. It tells you what the production aimed for. Whether a given film hits that mark is a judgment readers can make after watching it.

Pegg’s role as Benji Dunn
Pegg returns as Benji Dunn, the tech specialist who has anchored the team’s field operations and gives the films much of their comic and emotional texture. Filmfare describes this as Pegg’s sixth time in the role. A straightforward count of the series films in which Benji appears, starting with Ghost Protocol (2011), comes to five, including The Final Reckoning. The sixth figure is Filmfare’s own tally, so treat it as its reporting rather than a settled count.
How The Final Reckoning connects to the earlier films
The film is the eighth Mission: Impossible feature and follows Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023). The story picks up the thread of that film’s threat, and it is built for viewers who have followed the series, though the film does not require a full rewatch to follow the basic plot.

The series began with the 1996 original. That is why Pegg and Cruise frame the franchise in terms of decades rather than a single era. Cruise, speaking at Cannes, said he was “very grateful for 30 years to be able to entertain you with this franchise.” The original opened in 1996, so the actual span is nearly three decades; “30 years” is Cruise’s rounded figure.
Is this the end of the series?
The subtitle, The Final Reckoning, invites that question. Cruise, as reported by The Associated Press at Cannes in May 2025, called the film the culmination of three decades of work. He did not definitively confirm it as his last appearance in the role, and nothing in the reporting confirms an end to the franchise or the character. Read the title as a marker of the film’s ambitions and its place in the story, not as a formal announcement.

Pegg on the quiet moments (spoilers)
Spoiler warning: the following section discusses plot details from the film’s ending, including a prop returning from the 1996 original.
In a later interview with Collider, republished by Filmibee on June 3, 2025, Pegg moved the conversation away from stunts. “Mission is all about so many things. It’s about those big stunts — that’s what everyone always talks about, but Mission really is about the quiet moments. It’s about the character stuff.”

That emphasis explains much of the series’ appeal. The set pieces are what audiences remember, but Pegg’s point is that the films hold together because of the smaller moments between characters, and the ending is built on those relationships. What is not established
The reporting I could verify covers the 2025 theatrical release and Pegg’s and Cruise’s comments from that window. It does not establish current home-viewing availability in any territory, and that changes over time. Check your local streaming, rental or physical-media listings before you watch.
The headline’s phrase “This Summer” refers to the 2025 release window. The film is no longer upcoming, so read the timing as historical.
Pegg’s comments come from interviews published around the release. The original Collider preview is the exclusive source for the headline, and the quotations in this article are taken from the republished and syndicated versions named above.
