Cheryl Cole was removed from the judging panel of the US version of The X Factor in 2011 and replaced by Nicole Scherzinger. Fox and the show’s producers confirmed the change but did not give a reason. Simon Cowell’s public explanation was personal: he believed Cole missed home and seemed unhappy in the United States. Cole later said that, in hindsight, he understood the decision.
What the official announcement said
On 6 June 2011, Fox and the show’s co-producers announced that Scherzinger would replace Cole on the US judging panel. Cole had already filmed audition material, but the announcement did not explain why the production changed its lineup.
Why Cowell said Cole was removed
In comments reported at the time, Cowell said he thought Cole missed her family and friends and would be happier back in England. He also said she did not seem as happy as he had seen her on earlier shows. Those remarks are Cowell’s account of his thinking, not a reason stated in the production’s formal announcement.
What Cole and Cowell said later
In 2014, Cole reflected: “In hindsight he was right because I wasn’t myself. He wasn’t himself either. He was under a lot of strain because it was a new venture.” Her comments support the view that both personal circumstances and the pressures of launching the US show shaped how she experienced the job.

Cowell later described their falling-out as coming soon after Cole’s divorce, saying, “We were all wound up.” He also said he should have kept her on. In a separate 2014 interview, he said he had admitted his mistake and apologized. Cole returned as a regular judge on the UK version of The X Factor that year.
Was Cheryl Cole fired because of her accent?
Reports at the time speculated that US viewers might have trouble understanding Cole’s northern English accent, and some coverage also raised questions about her chemistry with fellow judge Paula Abdul. Neither explanation appeared in the formal announcement. Cowell rejected the accent and chemistry claims, saying Cole was good on the American show. The available public statements do not establish either as the reason for her removal.
