Critics received the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake favorably overall, but reviews differ on whether its changes improve on the 2001 game and how its updated movement feels. Developed by Bloober Team and published by Konami, the remake brings the psychological horror classic to PS5 and PC. That broad approval is useful context—not a substitute for deciding whether you want a close revisit or a more modern take on the original.
What critics agree—and disagree—about
Reviews point to a remake that recreates recognizable places while also expanding and updating the experience. Metacritic’s critic-review page includes praise for that treatment, alongside reservations about whether the remake surpasses the original and criticism of the protagonist’s heavy movement. Those examples show the range of reactions; they are not a count of every review or proof of a single consensus on each change. Metacritic’s critic reviews are an aggregator snapshot and can change as listings update, so any score or review count should be checked at the time it is quoted.

A remake measured against a landmark original
The 2024 release revisits the 2001 Silent Hill 2. That relationship shapes the central review question: does the new presentation preserve what made the original effective, and do its expansions and gameplay updates add enough to stand on their own? The available review excerpts show critics answering that differently. A favorable review of the recreation does not necessarily mean its author thinks it surpasses the source.
Updated gameplay has trade-offs
The remake’s heavier movement is one point of reservation visible in the reviews. For some players, deliberate movement can reinforce vulnerability in a horror game; for others, it may feel less responsive than they want. The critic excerpts establish that this is a point of criticism, but not how common that view is across all reviewers.

Release, platforms, and editions
The remake launched on October 8, 2024. PlayStation lists the PS5 version, while Konami’s product page lists PC storefronts Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. Availability on both platforms does not establish which one performs better; the cited official listings are not comparative performance tests. PlayStation.Blog announced the release date, and the current platform listings are on PlayStation’s US game page and Konami’s product page.
Standard or Deluxe
PlayStation’s US listing distinguishes the Standard Edition from the Deluxe Edition’s digital extras: a digital artbook and digital soundtrack, which includes tracks by Akira Yamaoka. These are digital bonuses, not physical collectibles. Check the store listing for your region before purchasing, since edition names and included content can vary by storefront.
PS5 or PC
Choose based on your preferred platform and the version available to you, rather than inferring performance from the fact that both are listed. Konami names Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG for PC; PlayStation lists PS5. The sources here do not establish comparative frame rates, resolution, or other performance results.

It is a promising choice for players who want to revisit the 2001 story with a modernized presentation, and the overall critical response is favorable. The main caveat is the very comparison that makes the remake compelling: critics differ on whether its changes surpass the original, and some object to the weight of its movement. Players new to the series can judge it as a contemporary horror game; returning players may weigh its interpretation against their attachment to the original.
