Shyam Benegal’s Nishant is a 1975 Hindi film about a village where feudal power turns sexual violence into a public crisis—and where the villagers’ eventual revolt raises difficult questions about justice and collective action. The film later appeared in the 1976 Cannes Competition, a separate milestone from its year of release.
What is Nishant about?
In the film’s story, a schoolmaster and his young wife arrive in a village dominated by four zamindar brothers. The brothers abduct and rape the wife. The schoolmaster, with help from a priest, eventually mobilizes the villagers, who kill the men. The plot links the assault to the brothers’ wider control over village life; the revolt is a violent political turn, not a simple or tidy resolution.
The Directorate of Film Festivals catalogue describes the film as based on Vijay Tendulkar’s original play, which was “apparently inspired by an actual event.” That qualified wording does not establish a specific historical incident as the film’s source.
Who made and starred in the film?
Benegal directed Nishant, and Tendulkar wrote it. Indiancine.ma lists a runtime of 2:16:56 and credits Govind Nihalani as cinematographer and Bhanudas Divakar as editor. Its ensemble includes Girish Karnad, Shabana Azmi, Anant Nag, Amrish Puri, Smita Patil, Satyadev Dubey, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Mohan Agashe, Naseeruddin Shah, Savita Bajaj and Sadhu Meher. Indiancine.ma’s catalogue record provides the film’s credits and synopsis.

What did Naseeruddin Shah recall about making Nishant?
In a BFI interview for Sight and Sound, Shah recalled, “As luck would have it, I got cast in Shyam’s second film, Nishant.” He also said his own family experience helped him understand the relationships among the brothers. That is an actor’s account of his approach to the roles, not evidence about the story’s historical origins. Read Shah’s BFI interview.
Was Nishant shown at Cannes?
Yes. The Cannes archive lists the film in the 1976 Competition. Indian film catalogues identify it as a 1975 film, so the dates refer to different events: the film’s year and its later festival appearance. Cannes’s own record labels it “1976.” Its 2024 retrospective essay groups Nishant with Ankur and Manthan as Benegal’s rural-oppression trilogy; that is the festival’s framing of the films. Why revisit Nishant?
The film’s central conflict makes power visible in its most intimate and public forms: the brothers’ violence against one woman and the community’s eventual response to their rule. Its place in Benegal’s early work, the Cannes Competition appearance and Shah’s recollection of the production give different ways into the film’s history without reducing its story to a single claim about what inspired it.
