Its 2024 official trailer introduced a boss called Shogun and previewed a fictional, post-apocalyptic alternate America. The game is currently listed for PS5 and PC, with release planned for 2026.
What is Showa American Story?
Developed by NEKCOM Games (listed as NEKCOM Entertainment on Steam), Showa American Story is an action role-playing game set in a deliberately fictional version of America. In its alternate history, Japan’s economic power reshapes American culture; a catastrophe later leaves the country overrun by zombies and monsters, with human survivors scattered across the landscape. The premise is stylized fiction, not a depiction of real history.

The story follows Chigusa Choko, who revives after the disaster and sets out on a journey across the United States. The game combines melee and ranged combat with exploration, survivors’ stories, and an RV that serves as a home base. Players can upgrade and take part in activities amid the game’s nostalgic 1980s cultural references. Steam’s game page describes the setting and gameplay.
What did the 2024 trailer show?
Gematsu described the 2024 official trailer as five minutes long and reported that it introduced Shogun, a boss character. The trailer was titled “Showa American Story – Official Trailer 2024.” The available reporting establishes those details, but does not support a scene-by-scene account of the video.

Is Showa American Story coming to PS5?
Yes. The 2024 announcement identified PS5 and PC via Steam as platforms and said the previously announced PS4 version was no longer planned. Steam currently lists the game as not yet available and planned for release in 2026; that is a release window, not a confirmed launch date. Gematsu’s game listing also records a 2026 worldwide release listing.
Why the title can be mistaken for a documentary
The phrase “Showa: An American Story” can read like the name of a historical film, but the trailer and game listings identify this subject as a video game. Its “Showa America” is an invented setting that uses alternate-history satire and retro-pop-culture imagery. It should not be treated as a documentary or a factual account of Japanese-American history.
