It brings the shortest stretch of daylight of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest in the Southern Hemisphere. Your exact daylight total depends on where you live.
When is the shortest day of the year in 2026?
The December solstice is at 20:50 UTC on December 21, 2026. That is 3:50 p.m. EST in New York and 1:50 p.m. MST in Tucson. The local clock time—and, for locations far enough east or west of UTC, even the local calendar date—depends on time zone. Timeanddate’s 2026 solstice listing gives the event time and local conversions.
The solstice is a precise astronomical instant, not an entire day-long event. The calendar date of the December solstice can vary from year to year; in UTC it may fall on December 20, 21, 22 or 23.
What the December solstice means in each hemisphere
- Northern Hemisphere: December 21 is the year’s shortest interval between sunrise and sunset. The solstice marks the beginning of astronomical winter.
- Southern Hemisphere: The same solstice day has the year’s longest interval between sunrise and sunset. It marks the beginning of astronomical summer.
These are astronomical season definitions. Meteorological seasons use a separate calendar convention, so “winter begins” here means astronomical winter begins in the north.

At the solstice, the Sun is directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn, its farthest-south position during the year. After that instant, the point where the Sun is directly overhead begins moving north again.
Why is it the shortest day?
Earth’s rotational axis is tilted about 23.5 degrees relative to its orbital plane. In December, the Northern Hemisphere tilts away from the Sun. From northern locations, the Sun appears to travel a lower, shorter arc across the sky, leaving fewer hours between sunrise and sunset. The Southern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun and experiences the reverse.

The effect grows with latitude: winter daylight becomes shorter farther north, while places closer to the equator stay nearer to roughly 12 hours of daylight. Some locations at or beyond the Arctic Circle can experience polar night around the solstice. Earth’s changing distance from the Sun does not cause the seasons; axial tilt does. The National Weather Service’s explanation of astronomical seasons describes the tilt and seasonal pattern.
How many daylight hours are there on the shortest day?
There is no single daylight total for everyone. Latitude shapes the length of the day, hemisphere determines whether December is the annual minimum or maximum, and longitude and time zone affect local clock readings.

Is the earliest sunset on the solstice?
Usually, no. The solstice gives the shortest total span between sunrise and sunset, but the earliest sunset generally occurs before it and the latest sunrise afterward. The dates differ because apparent solar time—the time a sundial indicates—does not match clock time uniformly through the year. Earth’s axial tilt and its elliptical orbit make the apparent solar day vary slightly, shifting sunrise and sunset clock times around the solstice. Latitude also affects the dates. Timeanddate explains why the earliest sunset and winter solstice do not coincide.
In New York in 2026, the earliest sunset falls on December 7–8, at 4:28 p.m. EST, while the latest sunrise falls on January 4–5, at 7:20 a.m. EST. These dates and clock times are specific to New York; Seattle’s earliest sunset is listed as December 10 or 11. The solstice listing and Seattle table provide the location-specific details.
