Spoilers for FX’s Shōgun season 1, episode 7, “A Stick of Time.” Nagakado dies after slipping on a wet rock while pursuing Saeki and striking his head. It is an accident, not a successful assassination. The death leaves Toranaga grieving and politically cornered, but the episode does not confirm whether Toranaga’s announced surrender is his final move or part of a concealed plan.
What happens to Nagakado at the end of episode 7?
After Saeki reveals that he has joined Toranaga’s enemies, Toranaga announces he will surrender and travel to Osaka. Nagakado and Buntaro object. Toranaga answers, “No one has the right to tear the realm apart.”

Nagakado then attacks Saeki at the tea house. Saeki escapes; Nagakado slips on a wet rock and fatally hits his head. The sequence turns an impulsive attempt to act into a sudden, pointless death. TVLine’s April 2, 2024 recap describes the accident, and FX’s official episode 7 podcast discusses its impact: TVLine’s episode 7 recap and FX’s episode guide.
What Nagakado’s death means for Toranaga
The loss is both personal grief and a dynastic blow. On FX’s official episode 7 podcast, actor and producer Hiroyuki Sanada says Toranaga loves his son and tried to teach him patience. Toranaga saw potential in Nagakado, but his son was eager and not yet ready. Co-creator Rachel Kondo says Nagakado’s death “feels so pointless.”

- Rival 16th-century ninja clans battle for possession of a gold cache.
That pointlessness sharpens the crisis around Toranaga. Saeki has sided with his enemies, surrender appears to leave Toranaga exposed, and the son who might have carried his vision forward is gone. Sanada describes Toranaga’s hope for a “new world” as something that could not be completed in one generation; Nagakado’s death makes the future of that ambition less certain.
Does Toranaga have a plan?
Episode 7 does not answer that question. Toranaga publicly says he will surrender and go to Osaka, but the episode does not establish whether he intends to follow through or is concealing another strategy. Kondo says on FX’s podcast that viewers cannot yet know whether Toranaga is trying to survive or accept surrender. Treat the announcement as the position he states in this episode, not proof of a secret plan.

Why is the episode called “A Stick of Time”?
The title refers to the incense stick burning during Gin’s conversation with Toranaga. Gin asks him to support her vision for a guild that would protect courtesans’ work. Her proposal offers a quieter counterpoint to the episode’s betrayal and violence: she is thinking about a future profession and community, not only immediate survival.
FX’s official podcast describes Gin and Kiku as unusually forward-thinking within the show’s Sengoku-era setting. Producer Eriko Miyagawa says Gin is “planting a seed” for what historically becomes Yoshiwara, while explaining that the series deliberately pushes some customs forward in its portrayal of courtesans. That is the show’s framing; it does not establish that Gin literally founded the later institution. More on the episode is available through FX’s official episode 7 page.

FX’s Shōgun is adapted from James Clavell’s 1975 novel. TIME notes that the series broadens the story’s viewpoint and rearranges or compresses parts of Clavell’s timeline. That is helpful context for readers comparing the adaptation with its source, but without checking the relevant passage in the novel, it would be premature to claim that the book handles this specific death in the same way. TIME’s discussion of the adaptation is here.
