The Associated Press reported that she died in her sleep from complications of diabetes, citing her friend and publicist Gary Springer. Her longtime partner, Dan Gilroy, announced her death.
A career beyond The Shining
Duvall’s best-known film role was Wendy Torrance, the wife trapped in a snowbound hotel in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980). The performance made her a lasting presence in horror, but it was one part of a career that moved between independent-minded dramas, broad comedy and work for young audiences.

Robert Altman helped launch that career. His crew encountered Duvall at a Houston party while preparing Brewster McCloud, and Altman cast her in the film. She went on to appear in several of his movies, including McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Thieves Like Us, Nashville, Three Women and Popeye. In Three Women, she won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival, according to the AP.
Roles that show her range
- Altman’s dramas: Three Women, Nashville, Thieves Like Us and McCabe & Mrs. Miller put her in the distinctive ensemble worlds of the director’s 1970s films.
- Comedy and fantasy: In Altman’s Popeye, she played Olive Oyl, a role far removed from Wendy Torrance.
- Horror: In Kubrick’s The Shining, she played Wendy, whose fear and persistence anchor the film’s domestic terror.
She also created television for children
Duvall was not only a performer. As a producer and host, she brought classic stories to television through projects including Faerie Tale Theatre, Tall Tales & Legends and Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories. The Los Angeles Times recounts that she pitched television executives on a live-action fairy-tale series, an idea that became Faerie Tale Theatre.

Her approach to pursuing projects was captured in a 1991 interview quoted by the Los Angeles Times: “If I had listened to everyone who told me no, I’d never have gotten anything accomplished.”
What Duvall said about making The Shining
Duvall described the emotional demands of filming The Shining in stark terms. The AP cited a 1981 People interview in which she said she cried “12 hours a day for weeks on end.” The AP also reported her later remark about the production: “I will never give that much again.” Those comments concern her experience on that film; they do not establish a single explanation for her later decision to step away from Hollywood.

Online theories have often tied her retreat from acting solely to trauma from The Shining or to earthquake damage. The AP described those as internet theories, not verified explanations for her departure.

After years away from Hollywood, Duvall returned to acting in The Forest Hills, an independent horror film. The role marked a late-career return, while her legacy remained broader than any one film: a distinctive screen presence across Altman’s movies, Kubrick’s horror classic and television she helped produce and host.
