Their reign as a pair was brief: a historical title chronology says Michaels was stripped of his half in June after injuries sidelined him. The later Austin–Michaels match at WrestleMania XIV was a singles championship bout, not a continuation of their tag-team run.
When Austin and Michaels won the tag-team titles
On Raw on May 26, 1997, Austin and Michaels beat reigning champions Owen Hart and Davey Boy Smith to win the WWF Tag Team Championship. The detailed sequence comes from The History of WWE’s title-history compilation, rather than a contemporaneous WWE transcript: it says Michaels hit Smith with a superkick behind the referee’s back, allowing Austin to score the pin.
The win made them champions together, but their partnership did not last long in that role. The same chronology says Michaels was stripped of his half of the championship in June after injuries sidelined him, with the injury given as the on-screen explanation. It records Austin winning the vacant title with Dude Love on July 14, 1997, a separate championship run with a different partner.
Why the partnership was short-lived
The title-history account attributes the end of the pairing as champions to Michaels being sidelined by injuries. That explains why their shared championship reign ended; it does not establish that they never teamed again or had no other in-ring history together.

In a 2018 podcast discussion quoted in a report by EWrestling, Austin pushed back on rumors of animosity. He said, “So there wasn’t any animosity between me and Shawn. Me and Shawn we always cool,” and recalled that they had “absolutely ripped the roof off of these places” at house shows. The report quotes Austin’s comments; it is not the original podcast recording.
WrestleMania XIV was a singles rivalry
On March 29, 1998, in Boston, Austin faced Michaels in the main event of WrestleMania XIV. WWE’s official event page records Austin defeating Michaels to win his first WWE Championship, with Mike Tyson counting the winning pinfall. This was a singles title match, distinct from their 1997 tag-team championship run.

“Dream team” works as a fan-facing description of the pairing’s appeal, not as a documented label widely used at the time. The established story is more specific: they won the WWF Tag Team Championship together in May 1997, Michaels was sidelined and stripped of his half the following month, and Austin later spoke positively about wrestling Michaels at house shows. Their WrestleMania XIV match then gave the two a major singles showdown, rather than renewing the tag partnership.
