In March 2024, Rolling Stone reported allegations from five people who accused performer Darius Jeremy “DJ” Pierce, known professionally as Shangela, of sexual assault or attempted sexual activity when they were too intoxicated to consent. Pierce denied wrongdoing. The report came after a separate civil lawsuit by Daniel McGarrigle had been settled and dismissed with prejudice; that case’s outcome does not establish whether its allegations were true.
What the five people alleged
Rolling Stone reported in March 2024 that five people described alleged incidents between 2012 and 2018. LGBTQ Nation’s summary said the people alleged sexual assault or attempted sex when they were too intoxicated to consent; they were between 18 and 23 at the time of the alleged events. These are reported allegations, not adjudicated findings.
LGBTQ Nation also reported that the five people expressed concern that their accounts could be used to bolster anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-drag narratives. That is their stated concern, not an established motive on the part of others.
Pierce’s response
Pierce denied the allegations. In a statement from May 2023 reproduced by The Times of India, he said: “I can’t begin to explain how hurt and disgusted I am by these totally untrue allegations.” In its February 2025 report, Rolling Stone said Pierce had described the March 2024 claims as “false and unsupported by any evidence or reliable witness testimony.” These statements are his responses, not court findings.

McGarrigle’s separate lawsuit: settlement and dismissal
Daniel McGarrigle’s civil case was distinct from the five allegations reported in March 2024. His suit, filed in May 2023, concerned alleged conduct during his 2020 production work on the HBO series We’re Here. Pierce denied McGarrigle’s allegations, according to later reporting.
MyNewsLA reported that the parties attended mediation on January 16, 2024, and reached a settlement; the terms were not disclosed. In March 2024, a report citing court documents obtained by People said the lawsuit had been dismissed with prejudice. MyNewsLA had earlier reported that a judge dismissed McGarrigle’s gender-violence and civil-rights claims in October 2023, while other claims remained in the amended complaint at that time.

A settlement resolves a dispute between the parties, and dismissal with prejudice ends that lawsuit; neither outcome, by itself, establishes whether the underlying allegations were true or false.

On February 25, 2025, Rolling Stone reported that Eric Poff had filed a separate civil lawsuit and described the total number of men accusing Pierce as seven. The reviewed reporting does not establish the present status of Poff’s case as of October 2026, so it should not be described as currently pending, dismissed, or otherwise resolved without a current court record.

The 2025 article said the accusations had not resulted in criminal charges at the time it was published. That time-specific report does not establish the status of any investigation or criminal proceedings in October 2026.
