Shane’s Most Memorable Western Quote—and Who Says It

Joey’s “Shane! Shane! Come back!” is the famous closing cry in the 1953 Western. Shane’s “A man has to be what he is” is a separate farewell line.

The line most often remembered from Shane is Joey Starrett’s final cry: “Shane! Shane! Come back!” The boy shouts after the wounded gunfighter as he rides away. If you mean Shane’s most revealing line rather than the film’s closing call, it is: “A man has to be what he is, Joey.”

Who says “Shane! Shane! Come back!”?

Joey Starrett, played by Brandon De Wilde, calls the words to Shane, played by Alan Ladd. After the climactic shootout, Shane is wounded but survives. He tells Joey to go home, then rides away; Joey runs after him and pleads for him to return. The short version commonly quoted is “Shane! Shane! Come back!” Some summaries punctuate or render the repeated call differently.

The line is poignant because it is not a triumphant declaration from the gunfighter. It is a child’s attempt to hold on to someone who has become part of his family’s life, even though Shane cannot stay. CBS/AP describes Joey hollering for Shane to come back at the film’s ending: CBS/AP’s account of Shane.

What does Shane say to Joey before he leaves?

A different line is often remembered as Shane’s signature reflection: “A man has to be what he is, Joey. You can’t break the mold. I tried it and it didn’t work for me.” Shane is explaining why he cannot settle into the domestic life Joey would like him to share. His past as a gunfighter, he says, cannot simply be erased.

In the transcript published by Filmsite, Shane continues: “Joey, there’s no living with, with a killing. There’s no going back from one. Right or wrong, it’s a brand, a brand sticks.” These are Shane’s words, not Joey’s closing cry. The transcript is a secondary reference, not a verified production script: Filmsite’s Shane page.

How the two memorable lines differ

Line Speaker Place in the story What it expresses
“Shane! Shane! Come back!” Joey Starrett (Brandon De Wilde) The final departure A child’s emotional plea to the wounded gunfighter riding away
“A man has to be what he is, Joey. You can’t break the mold. I tried it and it didn’t work for me.” Shane (Alan Ladd) His farewell to Joey Why Shane believes he cannot return to settled family life

So the answer depends on what “greatest” means: Joey’s is the film’s signature final call; Shane’s is the more reflective statement of character.

Why the ending is associated with the film

Shane is George Stevens’s 1953 Western, based on Jack Schaefer’s 1949 novel. Its story places the mysterious gunfighter amid a conflict between homesteaders and cattleman Rufus Ryker. In the film, Shane leaves after the showdown, wounded and convinced that the valley has no place for guns—or for him. John K. Manos’s EBSCO Research Starters account identifies Joey’s call at the end and reports that the film received six Academy Award nominations and won for cinematography: EBSCO’s Shane (film).

The famous call is also a film-specific emphasis. A scholarly comparison of the adaptation notes that young Bob in Schaefer’s novel does not run after Shane calling “Come back Shane”; the novel’s departure is more muted than the film’s openly emotional ending: Nottingham Trent University’s study, Writing the West: Critical Approaches to Shane.

How highly was the quote ranked?

EBSCO reports that Joey’s final lines placed 47th on the American Film Institute’s 100 Years…100 Movie Quotes list in 2005. That ranking is evidence of the line’s recognition, not proof that any quote is objectively the greatest. The available account here is EBSCO’s 2019 report of the AFI placement.
