Shakira’s career is better told through documented milestones than a forced ranking of ten “best” and ten “worst” moments. The available record supports major breakthroughs, awards and public performances, but not ten objectively rankable career lows. This timeline follows the milestones that can be substantiated, in chronological order, and distinguishes career challenges from personal events that cannot responsibly be presented as professional setbacks.

Shakira’s career timeline

1991 — A record deal at 13

At 13, Shakira signed a three-record deal with Sony Music Colombia, an early commitment that set her recorded career in motion. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s biography identifies the deal and year.

1990s — Building a Spanish-language career

Before her English-language crossover, Shakira developed her career through Spanish-language recordings. This was a progression across releases, not a single overnight change. Her Sony Music Latin catalog and the Recording Academy artist profile provide context for that body of work.

1998 — Dónde Están los Ladrones?

The album is a key marker in Shakira’s Spanish-language career and appears in the Recording Academy’s album history. It belongs in the timeline as part of the artistic foundation that preceded her international English-language breakthrough.

2000 — First Grammy win

In the 2000 Grammy award year, Shakira won Best Latin Pop Album for MTV Unplugged, her first career Grammy, according to the Recording Academy. The award recognized work rooted in her Spanish-language catalog.

2001 — Laundry Service and a global breakthrough

The Recording Academy describes Laundry Service as Shakira’s global breakthrough album. It yielded “Whenever, Wherever,” her first Top 10 hit, according to the Academy’s career feature and artist timeline. The milestone was not a replacement for her Spanish-language work; it expanded her reach into English-language pop while her career continued across both languages.

2005 — Fijación Oral Vol. 1

The Spanish-language album later won the Grammy for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. Its recognition is another important point in a career that cannot be reduced to the crossover era alone.

2006 — “Hips Don’t Lie” with Wyclef Jean

The Recording Academy records “Hips Don’t Lie,” featuring Wyclef Jean, as a Grammy-nominated collaboration. It stands as a prominent mainstream single in her timeline; the sources cited here do not establish chart positions, so none are assigned.

2010 — “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” and the World Cup era

“Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” connected Shakira’s music with a global sports audience. The sources available for this timeline establish its place as a career-era milestone but do not support detailed performance or sales figures.

2014 — The self-titled Shakira

Sony Music Latin identifies Shakira as her tenth studio album. The release included “Can’t Remember to Forget You,” a collaboration with Rihanna, and continued her work across musical styles and audiences.

2017–2018 — El Dorado earns Grammy recognition

El Dorado won the 2018 Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album, according to the Recording Academy. The award added another major recognition to a career spanning Spanish-language releases and English-language crossover work.

2020 — Super Bowl LIV halftime show

Shakira co-headlined the Super Bowl LIV halftime show with Jennifer Lopez. The Recording Academy characterized the performance as a celebration of Latin culture. Its feature reported more than 308 million YouTube views as of March 20, 2024; that is a dated count, not a current view total.

2023 — A career exhibit at the GRAMMY Museum

The GRAMMY Museum presented an exhibit of Shakira’s career featuring artifacts such as her Super Bowl outfits and a crystal-covered Gibson Firebird. The museum says the guitar is covered with 70,000 black crystals. Shakira told the Associated Press, “It’s an honor to have the journey of my career displayed at the Grammy museum.” AP also quoted museum chief curator and vice president of curatorial affairs Jasen Emmons: “Shakira is the rare superstar who has discovered a way to keep evolving as an artist while growing her expansive audience along with her.” See the museum exhibit page and AP’s coverage.

2024 — Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran

Released in 2024, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran marked a new chapter in Shakira’s recorded career. The album later won the 2025 Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album, according to the Recording Academy’s artist profile. GRAMMY.com’s feature on the album revisited the arc of her career around its March 22 arrival.

2026 — Touring and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination

In an Associated Press interview published March 11, 2026, Shakira discussed her global tour and her 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination. She said, “I actually feel like I’m just starting my career.” The interview documents a nomination, not an induction; tour schedules and status can change. Read AP’s interview.

What counts as a “worst” moment?

A career-low ranking needs evidence that an event materially affected the artist’s professional work. The documented milestones above establish releases, awards, performances and recognition, but they do not provide ten well-supported career setbacks to rank alongside ten highs. Personal controversy or relationship coverage is not a substitute for career reporting, and it would be misleading to infer that a private event caused a professional outcome without evidence.

The strongest substantiated challenge in this timeline is the work of building a career across languages and audiences over decades—not a single documented failure that can fairly be labeled the worst moment. The Recording Academy artist profile gives a motto that fits that long view: “In this life, to earn your place you have to fight for it.” The profile does not specify the original interview context for the line.

How to read the milestones

  • Artistic and commercial turning points: albums such as Dónde Están los Ladrones? and Laundry Service mark distinct phases, rather than one defining the whole career.
  • Independent recognition: Grammy wins offer documented milestones, but an award is not the same measure as audience reach or artistic influence.
  • Language and geographic reach: the Spanish-language catalog and English-language crossover are interconnected parts of the career.
  • Public performance and legacy: the Super Bowl appearance and museum exhibit are documented public moments, not rankings of musical quality.

The Recording Academy artist profile lists four Grammy wins and seven nominations. Those figures are the profile’s tally as reviewed in 2026. No current comprehensive sales or streaming total is established by the cited sources, so a cumulative figure would not be reliable here.
