Shakira said she put her career on hold for a long time to be with Gerard Piqué while he played football. The remark came in an interview with The Sunday Times, reported by E! on March 16, 2024. It is her description of a personal choice—not proof that she stopped working altogether.
What Shakira said about putting her career on hold
In the interview, Shakira said: “For a long time I put my career on hold, to be next to Gerard, so he could play football.” E! also reported her remark that “There was a lot of sacrifice for love.” Both statements were attributed to Shakira’s Sunday Times interview.

The wording matters: Shakira described how she viewed her career and relationship at the time. It should not be recast as a claim that she quit music or did no professional work.
The relationship context
Sky News reported that Shakira and Piqué were together for 11 years, announced their separation in June 2022, and have two children. The interview remark reflects Shakira’s account of the relationship; it does not, by itself, establish how the couple divided decisions or responsibilities.

What her album timeline does—and does not—show
The Associated Press described Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran as Shakira’s first album in seven years and discussed how its songs turn pain into art. That gap between albums offers context for her comment, but it does not show that she stopped all career activity during those years. Nor does the album description establish that every song is about Piqué.
