Was Gerard Piqué Shakira’s husband?
No. Shakira and Piqué were long-term partners, not spouses. Calling him her “husband” is inaccurate: the couple did not marry. EL PAÍS described their relationship as lasting about 12 years in its 2022 coverage (EL PAÍS).

How did their relationship begin?
They met in 2010, shortly before the World Cup in South Africa. In a 2022 retrospective, EL PAÍS reported that Piqué recalled meeting Shakira in Madrid before the tournament. Shakira publicly presented him on social media in March 2011 with the words “Les presento a mi sol” (“I introduce to you my sun”).
When did Shakira and Piqué separate?
They announced their separation in June 2022. Their joint statement said: “We regret to confirm that we are separating. We ask for privacy at this moment for the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority.” Reuters reported the statement on June 4, 2022 (Reuters).

The announcement confirmed the breakup but did not give a reason. Rumors and interpretations of Shakira’s lyrics should not be treated as verified evidence of what privately caused the separation.
Why did they split?
Their public separation announcement did not explain why the relationship ended, and the sources cited here do not establish a definitive private cause. Shakira spoke about the experience in interviews, but her comments describe her perspective rather than provide independent proof of allegations about Piqué.

What Shakira said about their family
In a September 2022 interview with ELLE, Shakira emphasized Piqué’s continuing role as the father of their children. RTVE quoted her saying: “Independientemente de cómo terminaron las cosas o cómo nos sentimos Gerard y yo como expareja, él es el padre de mis hijos.” In English: “Regardless of how things ended or how Gerard and I feel as former partners, he is the father of my children.” (RTVE)
She also described moving to Spain and putting her career second to support Piqué’s football career as “un acto de amor”—an act of love. In a March 2024 interview with the Associated Press, she said she had to “pick up the pieces” of herself after difficult years and described music as “the glue” during that process. AP connected her album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran with her recent life experiences (Associated Press).

Do Shakira and Piqué have children?
Yes. They have two sons, Milan, born in 2013, and Sasha, born in 2015. In an October 6, 2026 report, EL PAÍS said the boys were living with Shakira in Miami and gave their ages as 13 and 11 (EL PAÍS).

According to EL PAÍS’s October 6, 2026 report, they appeared at Barcelona’s City of Justice in connection with a proceeding to review the children’s visitation arrangement. The paper reported that they had ratified a separation agreement before a judge in December 2022 and that the children moved with Shakira to Miami in April 2023.

As reported by EL PAÍS, Shakira’s position was that she did not want to reduce the time the boys spent with their father; she wanted the travel effort between Miami and Barcelona to be shared. That is her stated position, not a court finding. The report describes a review proceeding, not a final ruling.
