Shaitaan is a 2024 Hindi supernatural horror thriller built around a family’s helplessness when an intruder takes control of their teenage daughter. Its most compelling draw is R. Madhavan’s unsettling antagonist, but viewers looking for airtight story logic or restrained horror may find the screenplay and sustained violence harder to embrace. It is best suited to audiences who want a performance-led, intense family-in-peril story.
What is Shaitaan about?
Directed by Vikas Bahl, Shaitaan follows a family whose getaway turns frightening when an intruder possesses their teenage daughter and puts her under increasingly sinister commands. The central tension comes from the parents’ efforts to protect her while confronting a threat they cannot simply reason with or escape.
The principal cast includes Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, Jyothika, Janki Bodiwala, and Anngad Raaj. Netflix classifies the film as horror, psychological, and supernatural horror; the BBFC lists its UK theatrical release as Drama, Horror.
Is Shaitaan worth watching?
It may be, if you value a menacing central performance and a claustrophobic premise more than a tightly argued screenplay. The story’s family-in-peril setup provides a clear engine for escalating pressure, and Madhavan’s antagonist is the element most often singled out in critical responses. Those same responses also raise concerns about the script’s logic and memorability, as well as the film’s excesses.

Reception is mixed rather than unanimous. Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 43% Tomatometer from 14 critic reviews and a 55% Popcornmeter from 100+ ratings when retrieved on 8 October 2026; both are changeable platform aggregates, not fixed measures of quality. Critic Anupama Chopra, in a review dated 11 March 2024 and quoted on Rotten Tomatoes, praised Madhavan’s performance but argued that the film fails to deliver the joy of being terrorized. Other excerpts on the page describe it more favorably as a worthwhile psychological thriller and praise its performances.
How scary is Shaitaan?
The horror leans on coercion, prolonged menace, and physical danger rather than relying only on supernatural mystery. The BBFC’s UK theatrical classification warns of strong threat, violence, and injury detail. Its advice includes repeated beatings, blood, knife threats, forced self-harm, and disturbing scenes. The BBFC also notes flashing images that may affect viewers susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy.

This is a content note for the BBFC’s UK version, not a universal classification: ratings and advice can differ by territory. The film’s intensity is a significant part of its appeal for viewers seeking sustained, uncomfortable tension, but it may be a poor fit for anyone sensitive to violence, injury, coercion, or flashing images.
Is Shaitaan available on Netflix?
Netflix lists the film, with Hindi audio and subtitles shown in its catalog alongside some dubbed audio options. That listing does not guarantee availability in every country, and the available language tracks can vary by market. Check the Netflix title page in your region for current access and language options. The BBFC’s UK home-entertainment entry identifies Netflix as distributor for that streaming version.
