Steven Soderbergh’s Sex, Lies, and Videotape may feel less shocking for its sexual candor than it did in 1989. Its tighter, more lasting discomfort comes from watching a small group of people use confession, concealment and betrayal against one another. That is a critical interpretation, not a measured finding about what audiences feel today.
What film is the headline about?
It is Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Soderbergh’s first feature, released in 1989. The Festival de Cannes lists it as a competition film and records three awards: the Palme d’Or, the FIPRESCI International Critics’ Prize and Best Actor. The festival’s catalogue entry describes a comic drama set in contemporary Louisiana, where a seemingly idyllic marriage is exposed as a sham.
The central relationships are close and combustible: a husband is having an affair with his wife’s sister, while the wife becomes attracted to a man who records women talking about their sexual desires. Sony’s film page identifies the principal cast as James Spader, Peter Gallagher, Andie MacDowell and Laura San Giacomo.
Does it still shock today?
The sexual premise has lost some of its sting
A Digital Trends anniversary retrospective, published August 25, 2024, argues that frank sexual discussion and the idea of videotaped confessions seem less transgressive in a media environment shaped by social media. That helps explain why the film’s premise may not land with the same force now as it did at release.

The headline’s description of it as “the most controversial movie in America” is provocative framing, not a verified comparative ranking. The official festival and studio records establish the film’s identity, story and awards; they do not establish that it was objectively the country’s most controversial movie.
The intimacy is the more durable provocation
The movie’s unease is not simply a matter of sexual material. The camera turns intimate disclosure into a spectacle, while the characters’ secrets and betrayals alter the balance of power among people who know one another well. Digital Trends’ reading is that this close-up, dialogue-led drama retains its force even if the premise feels less shocking. That is a critical judgment, not an audience survey or a newly conducted screening.

Why the “35 years ago” headline is dated
The phrase comes from Digital Trends’ August 2024 anniversary headline: the film had been released in 1989, 35 years earlier. In 2026, it is 37 years since that release year. The old headline is useful context, but its anniversary count is not current.
