Spoilers for Severance season 2, episode 9, “The After Hours.” The penultimate episode sends Mark, Devon and Harmony to a birthing retreat, puts Helly in Jame’s path, and leaves Dylan’s attempt to quit unresolved. Its clues invite theories about the finale—but none of these seven predictions is confirmed by the episode.
What happens in “The After Hours”
Apple’s official listing identifies “The After Hours” as season 2, episode 9, released March 14, 2025, with a 44-minute runtime. Its synopsis is brief: “Mark and Devon team with an ally. Helly investigates further.” The episode is the season’s penultimate chapter, and much of its work is to set up questions for the finale.
Mark, Devon and Harmony head to the birthing retreat
Mark, Devon and Harmony converge at the Damona Birthing Retreat, described in TechRadar’s recap as a Lumon-owned location with severed barriers at the cabin doors. In that account, crossing a threshold can switch a person between innie and outie. That makes the cabin a possible means for Mark’s two selves to communicate, but the episode does not show them successfully doing so.
Jame confronts Helly
Helly follows Irving’s directions as she tries to memorize a route to the Exports Hall. Jame interrupts and tells her, “You tricked me,” then calls her “My Helly,” according to TIME’s March 14, 2025 episode analysis. Those words sharpen the mystery around what Jame knows about Helly and Helena, without explaining his intentions.

Irving leaves with Burt’s help
Burt takes Irving and his dog to a train station and buys him a one-way, non-transferable ticket. The gesture reads as an effort to put distance between Irving and Lumon. Whether Irving will return to the story is still open.
Dylan tries to resign
After Gretchen rejects further contact with his innie, Dylan tries to leave Lumon. The episode shows him entering an elevator, but does not resolve whether his resignation will go through.
Ms Huang leaves the severed floor
Milchick tells Ms Huang that she has graduated and will continue her training in Svalbard. The episode does not establish why she is being sent there; the idea that Lumon wants to remove a potential source of interference is an interpretation, not a confirmed motive.

Milchick’s loyalties remain uncertain
His confrontation with Drummond and an emotional phone call with Mark can be read as signs of pressure—or even wavering allegiance. They also fit the possibility that Milchick remains a company man trying to manage a difficult situation. The episode settles neither reading.

Seven theories for the season finale
These are predictions, not reveals. Each starts with an episode clue; the alternative notes what else that clue could mean.
-
Mark’s two selves may communicate at the cabin
Clue: The retreat’s severed barriers could let Mark cross between innie and outie states. Theory: The group may use that setup to pass information between his selves. Alternative: The location may matter for another reason, or the opportunity may not lead to successful communication.

Burt and Irving may return

-
Jame may force Helly into a choice
Clue: Jame’s “You tricked me” and “My Helly” suggest a personal claim or history. Theory: He could take Helly hostage to force a choice between her and Gemma. Alternative: His words may reflect a different understanding of his relationship with Helly and Helena, one the episode has not yet explained.

Clue: Her fellowship ends and Milchick says her training will continue in Svalbard. Theory: Lumon may want to remove her from the severed floor because she could interfere. Alternative: The episode also allows for a straightforward explanation: her training is continuing elsewhere. Her motive for the transfer is not established.

Why is the episode called “The After Hours”?
TIME notes a possible connection to “The After Hours,” a 1960 episode of The Twilight Zone. In that story, Marsha White discovers she is a mannequin who lives among humans for a month before returning late. TIME also notes that Cobel refers to the story during the birthing-retreat exchange. The parallel invites a reading about hidden identities and the boundary between ordinary life and an artificial world, but the episode does not confirm a definitive meaning for its title.
What remains unresolved heading into the finale
The episode leaves several distinct questions open: whether Mark’s innie and outie can communicate; what Jame means by claiming Helly; what Cobel wants; whether Dylan can leave Lumon; and what Irving’s departure means for his story. Its title reference adds another interpretive clue rather than an answer. The finale will have to resolve some of these threads, but this episode does not establish which theories will prove right.
