Why Salt’s Neck changes the scale of the story
Until this episode, Lumon’s power has been most visible in its controlled offices and the company-shaped world around Kier. Salt’s Neck offers a different view: not a polished corporate environment, but a rundown settlement marked by Lumon-linked buildings and a history that reaches back beyond the severed workers we know.
The shift matters because Lumon is no longer just a company that controls a strange workplace. In the account of Salt’s Neck presented here, its influence has shaped the community itself. The episode makes that history tangible through the town’s ether mill and through Harmony’s own childhood memories.

What happened at Salt’s Neck?
Harmony and Hampton’s shared past
Harmony visits the Drippy Pot Cafe and meets Hampton, an old acquaintance. They grew up together and, according to the episode recap by Germain Lussier for io9, worked for Lumon as children. Hampton frames that history as “child labor”; Harmony calls them “colleagues.” The contrast is more than a difference in word choice: it shows how deeply Lumon’s language can recast exploitation as respectable work.
The ether mill
The recap describes an ether mill at the center of Salt’s Neck, where Lumon employed children in poor conditions. Some of those children became addicted to ether. The mill gives the town’s decay a concrete history: the company’s reach was not limited to the office, and its costs were borne by people who had little power to refuse its demands.

What does Harmony find in the notebook?
Harmony goes to the home of Sissy Cobel, a relative and former guardian figure, searching for something hidden there. The house carries traces of Salt’s Neck’s Lumon culture, including Sissy’s recognition as a “Youth Apprentice Matron.” It is also bound up with Harmony’s memories of her mother and a locked room her mother left behind. The recap does not settle the circumstances of her mother’s death, so Sissy’s responsibility remains unresolved.
In an underground storage area, Harmony finds her old notebook concealed inside a bust of Kier. As described in the io9 recap, the notebook attributes the invention of severance to Harmony. It also connects her to the overtime contingency and the Glasglow block. That is a major challenge to the story Lumon tells about its technology, but the episode’s evidence in this account is the notebook’s claim—not an independently confirmed history of who invented severance.

When Harmony confronts Sissy with the notebook, Sissy tries to burn it. Harmony escapes as Lumon’s response appears imminent. At the episode’s end, she answers Devon’s call and asks to speak with Mark, setting up a new possibility for what she will do with what she has found.
What the episode’s contrasts reveal
- The office and the town: Lumon’s clean, controlled workplace sits against Salt’s Neck’s rundown buildings and the visible consequences of the company’s past.
- Company language and lived experience: Harmony’s description of her childhood work as collegial clashes with Hampton’s blunt characterization of it as child labor.
- Public mythology and private evidence: Lumon’s account of severance faces a challenge from Harmony’s notebook, though the notebook’s claim is not the same as independent confirmation.
Production note
Lussier’s io9 recap, published March 7, 2025, describes Patricia Arquette’s Harmony-focused episode as filmed entirely in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. That location detail is reported by the recap; Apple TV’s episode listing confirms the title, episode number, release date, runtime, and bonus feature, but does not independently establish the filming location.
