The episode follows Cobel back to Salt’s Neck, the coastal town where she grew up and a former Lumon company town. Contemporary recaps describe a struggling community around an abandoned factory. Cobel reconnects with Hampton, an old friend, and searches her childhood home for something she hid there. The town’s history matters: her relationship with Lumon began long before her work at the company’s severed floor.
What does Cobel find in the notebook?
Cobel recovers a notebook containing her original designs for the severance procedure. TheWrap describes it as a collection of blueprints, schematics and theories, including the Overtime Contingency and Glasgow Block. Its existence challenges the Eagans’ claim to have created severance.

The discovery makes Cobel’s resentment more specific than a grievance over her career. She believes the Eagans took credit for her work, and says she would have been banished for seeking recognition. Sissy tries to burn the notebook, but Cobel saves it and leaves with the evidence. TheWrap’s Episode 8 recap.
Is Harmony Cobel trying to take down Lumon?
Possibly—but Episode 8 does not establish a settled plan to bring down Lumon. The notebook could give Cobel leverage against the Eagans by challenging their authorship of severance. TheWrap reads her return to Salt’s Neck as a search for proof that could damage the Eagan name. That is a plausible interpretation of her actions, not a declaration of her ultimate goal.

The episode’s closing scene offers another clue. Devon tells Cobel that Mark has been reintegrated and is still alive. Cobel asks to speak with him. The Ringer reports her final words as, “Tell me everything.” The Ringer’s Episode 8 recap.
That request could mean Cobel wants to understand what Mark experienced, use his knowledge, help him, or pursue her own interests. The scene opens the possibility of cooperation; it does not confirm an alliance or tell us what she plans to do next.

Why Salt’s Neck changes how the ending reads
Salt’s Neck gives Cobel a personal history with Lumon as well as a professional one. Recaps describe the town as a former company community whose factory has closed. TIME reports that Cobel’s mother, Charlotte, died while Cobel was away at the Myrtle Eagan School for Girls. Cobel blames Sissy for removing Charlotte’s breathing tube; Sissy says Charlotte removed it herself. The episode’s competing accounts do not resolve who is right. TIME’s Episode 8 recap.
Her return connects the company’s influence to the place and relationships that shaped her. The notebook then adds a second grievance: Cobel believes the Eagans claimed credit for her work. But her history as a Lumon loyalist makes a straightforward redemption story premature. She may oppose the Eagans without becoming an uncomplicated ally to Mark or to Lumon’s other opponents.

What the ending establishes—and what it leaves open
- Established: Cobel retrieves her notebook of severance designs and leaves with it.
- Established: Devon tells her Mark has been reintegrated and is alive; Cobel asks to speak with him.
- Possible implication: The notebook could help Cobel challenge the Eagans’ claim to severance and gain leverage.
- Unresolved: Whether her priority is exposing Lumon, revenge, recognition, concern for Mark, or some combination—and whether she will work with him.
Apple’s companion feature, “Inside the Episode 208: ‘Sweet Vitriol,’” says the cast and creatives discuss the episode and Cobel’s connection to her hometown. It offers additional episode context, not a definitive statement of her plans. Apple TV’s “Inside the Episode” feature.
