Yes. “Chikhai Bardo,” the seventh episode of Severance season two, reveals that Gemma is alive and being held by Lumon. It shows her moving through a testing floor where entering each room brings a different innie to the surface. The episode does not explain what Lumon is measuring, why it faked Gemma’s death, or exactly how her tests connect to Mark’s work on Cold Harbor.
What happens in “Chikhai Bardo”?
The episode moves between Gemma’s past with Mark, her present at Lumon, and Mark’s unconscious state after complications from reintegration. Memories trace the couple’s relationship from their meeting through domestic life and arguments to the night Gemma disappeared. They make her absence more than a plot mystery: the episode gives a glimpse of the life Lumon’s deception took from both of them.

At the same time, Gemma is shown on a previously unseen Lumon testing floor. She is prepared for the day and sent into a succession of rooms. Crossing into each one brings a distinct innie forward; when that state ends, Gemma’s outie has no memory of what happened inside. Among the scenarios depicted are dental work, writing thank-you notes, an abusive Christmas, and a simulated plane crash.
The episode is unusually surreal, directed by Jessica Lee Gagné, the series’ regular director of photography. Its title and the parallel experiences of Mark and Gemma invite interpretation, but the clearest revelation is literal: Gemma is alive, and Lumon is subjecting her to controlled experiences through severance.

What is Lumon testing on Gemma?
The rooms appear to put different innie states through distinct conditions, including stressful ones. That suggests Lumon is testing how severance behaves across varied experiences, but this is an interpretation, not an explanation the episode confirms. It never spells out what the tests measure or what outcome Lumon wants.
Gemma’s own line—“the same guy fighting himself. Defeating his own psyche. Ego death.”—echoes the episode’s interest in divided inner lives. It is dialogue in the story, not an authoritative definition of a psychological or religious concept.

What is Cold Harbor, and how is Mark connected?
Cold Harbor is the name of Mark S.’s Lumon project and of the one testing-floor room Gemma has apparently not yet entered. The episode also shows what may be a Cold Harbor monitoring room and indicates that the project is 96 percent complete. That percentage is an in-universe detail, not a real-world statistic.
The overlap between Mark’s work and Gemma’s remaining room points toward a connection, but does not establish what Cold Harbor is or why its completion might matter to her. The episode leaves the relationship between his project and her captivity unresolved.

What does Gemma’s confrontation with Dr. Mauer reveal?
Dr. Mauer tells Gemma that Mark has moved on. She confronts him, then tries to escape toward the elevator; the ride triggers an innie, and she is intercepted. The sequence shows how tightly Lumon controls her movement and how a change of state can disrupt an escape attempt.
Elsewhere, a memory places Mauer at an IVF office with Gemma and Mark. The episode offers that glimpse without clarifying his role in their lives before Lumon or what it means for the company’s involvement in Gemma’s disappearance.

What the episode answers—and what it leaves open
- Answered: Gemma is alive and at Lumon, undergoing room-based tests that produce different innie states.
- Unresolved: Why Lumon faked her death, what the testing program is meant to accomplish, and whether other people have undergone comparable tests.
- Unresolved: What Cold Harbor actually is and how Mark’s work relates to Gemma’s captivity.
- Unresolved: What Dr. Mauer’s appearance at the IVF office says about his earlier relationship with Gemma and Mark.
Germain Lussier’s February 28, 2025, recap for io9/Gizmodo likewise distinguishes the episode’s revelations from the larger questions it does not settle. The strongest takeaway is not that Lumon’s plan has been explained, but that Gemma’s survival turns Mark’s personal loss into an active part of the company’s experiment.
