Spoilers for Severance Season 2, Episode 4, “Woe’s Hollow.” Irving is right: the “Helly” at the retreat is Helena Eagan, not Helly R. Helena’s plea to Milchick prompts him to order the Glasgow Block shut down, and Helly reappears. The episode confirms the switch but leaves the Glasgow Block’s function and Irving’s fate unexplained.
What happens in “Woe’s Hollow”
Lumon takes the Macrodata Refinement team on an Outdoor Retreat and Team-Building Occurrence (ORTBO), presented as a response to the innies’ escape from the office. The group follows an uncanny route marked by silent doubles and searches for the Fourth Appendix to Kier Eagan’s Compliance. They pass Scissor Cave before reaching Woe’s Hollow, where Lumon’s tale of Kier and his supposed twin Dieter becomes part of the retreat.

That story is Lumon’s in-universe lore; the episode does not independently establish every claim in the handbook or presentation as historical fact. Apple lists the episode as a 50-minute thriller/mystery released February 7, 2025, with the official synopsis, “The team participates in a group activity.” Apple TV episode listing.
At the camp, “Helly” cruelly mocks Irving about Burt and his outie. The next morning, Irving confronts her by the water and nearly drowns her, apparently trying to force Lumon to respond. She appeals to Milchick. He orders the Glasgow Block shut down, and the person in the water switches back to Helly. Mark, who believed he was with Helly, has instead been intimate with Helena. The episode leaves the emotional fallout for Mark and Helly unresolved.

Three mysteries the episode answers
1. Was that really Helly?
No. The person who returned to the office and joined the team’s retreat was Helena Eagan impersonating her innie. The decisive moment comes when she calls Milchick “Seth”; he responds to her, orders the Glasgow Block shut down, and Helly reappears. Irving’s suspicion is confirmed.
2. Why does the retreat feel like a Lumon ritual?
The Fourth Appendix, Scissor Cave, Kier’s tempers, and Woe’s Hollow show Lumon folding its founder mythology into employee control and team-building. Adam Scott interpreted the retreat as a reaction to the innies’ Season 1 escape. In a February 7, 2025 interview with TIME, he said Lumon was effectively telling the innies, “OK, you want to go out into the world? Here you go,” as a lesson. That is Scott’s reading of Lumon’s motive, not a complete canonical explanation.
3. Does Irving’s confrontation trigger the switch?
The sequence connects Milchick’s order to shut down the Glasgow Block with Helly’s return: the order comes immediately before the switch. The episode does not explain the mechanism behind that connection.

Five questions the ending leaves open
1. What is the Glasgow Block?
Milchick orders it shut down, and Helly appears immediately afterward. The episode does not identify whether the Glasgow Block is a procedure, system, or another kind of Lumon control. Claims that it kills, suppresses, or stores an innie remain theories, not answers established here.

2. Is Irving dead?
Milchick says Irving will be retired, but the episode cuts away before showing what happens. It does not confirm whether Irving’s innie is destroyed, suppressed, or handled in some other way.
3. Did Kier really have a twin named Dieter?
The Fourth Appendix presents Dieter as Kier’s twin, but “Woe’s Hollow” does not establish whether that is literal history or Lumon mythology. Dan Erickson, the series creator, told TheWrap that he enjoys writing Lumon lore, joking, “I need to get out and touch grass and feel the sun. But I love it. I’m my own worst enemy with it.” His enthusiasm for the lore does not verify this particular story as fact.

4. Who are the silent doubles in the woods?
They guide the group, but the episode does not identify them. Calling them clones, recordings, or a specific Lumon experiment goes beyond what is shown.
5. What does the Montauk allusion mean?
A possible connection to the real-world Montauk Project is an interpretation, not a solved mystery. No creator statement cited in the episode coverage confirms that the allusion is intentional.

What the performances add—and what they do not
Britt Lower described Helly and Helena as “two parts of the same person,” adding that there is “an inner rebel inside of Helena.” That is Lower’s interpretation of the characters and her performance, not confirmation of Helena’s next move or intentions toward Mark.

One smaller question also remains unanswered: Irving tells Dylan to “hang in there,” but the episode coverage does not establish that the line is a coded message or refers to a hidden drawing. Mark’s next conversation with Helly is left for a later episode.
Episode details and production context
TheWrap reported that the snow-covered episode was filmed at Minnewaska State Park in upstate New York. Lower estimated that the shoot lasted “about four or five weeks.” Apple’s episode page also lists a four-minute bonus feature, “Inside S2 E4: Woe’s Hollow.”
The official Severance companion podcast listing identifies composer Theodore Shapiro as the episode’s guest and says the discussion covers the score and Kier folk tunes; it is production context, not an explanation of the plot’s open questions.
