The finale’s central reveal is that Lumon’s Macrodata Refinement work is tied to creating consciousnesses for Gemma; its final file, Cold Harbor, tests her against trauma connected to her fertility struggles. What the episode does not show is what happens next to Mark and Helly—or the full technical purpose of Lumon’s project.
What happens at the end of “Cold Harbor”?
“Cold Harbor,” the Season 2 finale, was written by series creator Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller. Its ending brings two conflicts together: Lumon’s experiment with Gemma and the growing divide between innie Mark’s interests and those of his outie.

- Gemma faces the Cold Harbor test. She is made to dismantle a crib, confronting painful feelings tied to her fertility struggles. Erickson explained that the test is built around this emotional trauma.
- Innie Mark and outie Mark confront their competing needs. They speak directly—a first for the series, according to Erickson. Outie Mark wants his innie to help save Gemma; innie Mark understands that the request could mean giving up his own life.
- Innie Mark gets Gemma to the exit. The rescue reaches the threshold where Gemma’s outie can return.
- Mark turns back to Helly. Instead of completing his outie’s plan, he runs with Helly. The finale ends before their next move or eventual fate is revealed.
What is Cold Harbor, and what is MDR doing?
The finale reveals that Lumon’s Macrodata Refinement work is connected to building new consciousnesses for Gemma. The phrase “The numbers are your wife” is spoken by Harmony Cobel in the episode; it is not a line Erickson says in the interview explaining the reveal. Erickson confirms the connection between MDR’s work and Gemma, while the crib test gives Cold Harbor its emotional focus.
The episode does not fully explain the mechanism by which sorting numbers creates those consciousnesses, or Lumon’s ultimate intended use for Cold Harbor. It also leaves the full purpose of the goat-related ritual unresolved. Those gaps are not answers hidden in the finale; treating any particular explanation as confirmed would go beyond what it establishes.

Why does Mark choose Helly instead of leaving with Gemma?
Erickson frames the decision as innie Mark recognizing that his life matters in its own right, rather than existing only as an instrument of his outie. Earlier in the season, innie Mark pursues Ms. Casey partly because he sees it as his responsibility to his outie. By the finale, he has his own relationships and reasons to survive.
Erickson says innie Mark’s love for Helly is as strong as, or stronger than, outie Mark’s love for Gemma. That is the creator’s account of the character’s choice, not an objective ranking of the two relationships. Gemma is a person imprisoned and subjected to Lumon’s test; Helly is the person with whom innie Mark has built a life of his own. The dilemma is not simply a romance contest: the two Marks have distinct memories, attachments and interests.

What does the final image mean?
Stiller said the filmmakers wanted the audience to see Mark make a choice rather than end on a decision-free cliffhanger. He described the image as holding togetherness and danger at once: “OK, we’re together. But they’re stuck in this really hellish reality.” Mark and Helly have chosen to stay together, but the finale does not show how long they can remain inside or what they will do next.

Will there be a Season 3?
Apple announced a third season on March 21, 2025. That announcement confirms the renewal, not the season’s plot or release date. The finale remains unresolved on screen; neither Mark and Helly’s next steps nor Gemma’s future are established by the announcement.
