Severance turns the office into a place of quiet, escalating terror. Its nine-episode first season makes a strange idea—surgically separating employees’ work memories from their personal memories—feel unsettlingly human, thanks to a controlled visual style and performances that keep the mystery grounded. The puzzle-box story can frustrate when a twist feels more like a logistical gap than a deliberate mystery, but the season’s tension and atmosphere make it compelling workplace horror.
What is Severance about?
At Lumon Industries, employees undergo a fictional surgical procedure that divides their memories between work and personal life. Mark leads a team whose office-bound selves know nothing of their lives outside Lumon, while their outside selves have no access to what happens at work. Apple describes the series as a thriller built around this split between employees’ work and personal lives; the procedure is science fiction, not a real medical treatment.
The premise is immediately legible without being simple. It turns the familiar promise of work-life balance into a literal separation of identity, then asks what happens when the people created by that division are treated as tools. The result is both a workplace satire and a source of genuine dread: ordinary routines become disturbing because the workers performing them cannot see the whole of their own lives.
How does season one build its tension?
Lumon’s clean, fluorescent interiors are central to the effect. The office feels controlled to the point of unreality, while the world outside is less orderly and more emotionally textured. TIME’s review credits this visual contrast as part of Ben Stiller’s direction. Rather than relying only on shocks, the season lets unease accumulate through routine, unanswered questions, and the gap between what the characters know and what viewers suspect.

That slow escalation eventually gives way to a finale TIME described as genuinely jarring. The season’s original release also supported a measured build: its first two episodes arrived globally on February 18, 2022, with the remaining episodes released weekly on Fridays. That schedule is historical release information, not a guide to current availability.
Do the characters and performances make the premise work?
Yes. The high-concept split could leave the characters feeling like pieces in a thought experiment, but the cast gives their divided lives emotional weight. TIME highlights the ensemble, including Britt Lower, Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, and Christopher Walken. Their performances help distinguish the people moving through Lumon’s rules from the larger mystery those rules conceal.

That grounding matters because the show’s ethical questions are not abstract for long. The premise invites viewers to consider whether a person can be separated from responsibility for what another version of themselves does, and what obligations an employer has to workers who cannot consent with full knowledge of their circumstances. The series raises those questions through character and atmosphere rather than treating them as a lecture.
Does the mystery pay off?
Season one delivers mounting tension and a forceful finale, but it does not resolve every uncertainty. TIME’s reservation is worth taking seriously: some plot turns can feel like logistical difficulties or holes rather than carefully withheld answers. Viewers who enjoy ambiguity and speculation may find that quality part of the appeal; anyone who expects every mechanism to be explained may find the story withholding.

The distinction is important. A mystery can leave questions open on purpose, but that does not make every confusing turn satisfying. Severance is strongest when its unanswered questions deepen the characters’ predicament or sharpen the ethical stakes. It is less satisfying when the mechanics of a twist seem harder to follow than the idea behind it.
How many episodes are in season one, and where can you watch it?
Season one has nine episodes. Apple’s US series listing offers it on Apple TV and classifies the show as thriller and mystery. Streaming availability and subscription terms can change and vary by country, so check the listing for your region.

What recognition did season one receive?
In August 2022, Apple TV Press described the first season as having received 14 Emmy nominations. That figure refers to the season’s nominations as announced in 2022; it is not a combined total for later seasons.
