Seventeeners, also known as Hadinelentu, is a 2022 Kannada feature by director Prithvi Konanur. It follows the fallout after an intimate video made by two students spreads beyond their control, examining how family pressure, school and police responses, and the students’ unequal caste and class positions shape what happens next.

What is Seventeeners about?

Students Deepa and Hari make an intimate video in a classroom. When it circulates beyond their control, the consequences draw in their families, school administration, police and legal proceedings. The drama focuses on the aftermath rather than treating the recording as a sensational plot device.

Deepa is from a working-class Dalit background, while Hari is from a privileged Brahmin background. The film shows how those differences inform the treatment the two students receive as institutions and families respond. It is a story about intimacy and privacy, but also about unequal power and the systems that shape young people’s lives.

Is Seventeeners based on a true story?

No. In an interview with Scroll, Konanur described the film as fiction while acknowledging that similar incidents have happened. He said, “Such incidents have happened before, and we have seen their effects too, but the film is a work of fiction.” The film should therefore not be presented as a dramatization of a specific real case.

Who made the film?

Prithvi Konanur directed Seventeeners and co-wrote it with Anupama Hegde, a lawyer. The festival listing also credits Konanur and Hegde as writers, Prithvi Konanur and Thejaswi Konanur as producers, and Konanur Productions as the production company. The listed cast includes Sherlyn Bhosale, Neeraj Matthew, Rekha Kudligi, Bhavani Prakash, Ravi Hebballi, Sudha Belawadi and Nagendra Shaa. Cinehill gives the runtime as 123 minutes in its 2023 program listing.

How does it approach the subject?

Konanur told Scroll that he researched legal aspects while developing the screenplay. The film combines professional and non-professional performers with a verité-influenced style, naturalistic performances and scenes allowed to play out. He described the challenge of shaping the story this way: “The fundamental idea is of two teenagers indulging in intimacy and this act getting leaked. How do you explore it, and where do you take it? The screenplay took a long time to crack.”

Konanur also said, “Our efforts should be to make films look as plausible and realistic as possible.” His description of the conflict as confusing and vague helps explain the film’s approach, but does not mean it lacks a point of view. The result is a drama that lets the consequences and competing pressures develop rather than reducing the situation to a simple lesson.

How is it connected to Pinki Elli?

Seventeeners is another film by Konanur, who directed Pinki Elli? Scroll describes both films as examining the moral choices ordinary people face in extraordinary circumstances. That is a connection in the director’s interests, not evidence that the films share a plot or story world.
