For South African Grade 12 Sesotho Home Language, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) lists both a teacher resource called “Sesotho HL Poetry” and a literature study guide titled Melodi ya Dithothokiso. The guide can help you prepare for poetry questions, but it does not establish which poems are prescribed for your examination year. Confirm the current poem list with your school or provincial examination authority before relying on an older list.
What “Sesotho HL Poetry” refers to
Here, Sesotho HL Poetry means poetry studied as part of South African Grade 12 Sesotho Home Language. The DBE lists Sesotho as a Further Education and Training (FET) Home Language in its CAPS curriculum information. The department describes the National Curriculum Statement as policy on curriculum and assessment, with comprehensive Curriculum and Assessment Policy documents developed for each subject.

What the DBE guide, Melodi ya Dithothokiso, offers
The DBE’s Grade 12 Mind the Gap literature listing names the Sesotho Home Language poetry guide as Melodi ya Dithothokiso. The department describes Mind the Gap as a CAPS-aligned study-guide series. Its literature-guide description says the guides explain key terminology and provide examples of examination question types and possible responses.
#1 Best Overall
The DBE’s separate Mind the Gap study-guide page lists the Sesotho guide as a 5.04 MB digital resource. The listing establishes an official digital guide; it does not establish a current print edition, retail availability, or a price.
How to study a Sesotho poem for matric
Use the guide to support close reading, not to replace the poem itself, your teacher’s explanations, or current examination instructions. A practical study sequence is:
Rank #2
- Language fundamentals grade 1
- Language skills
- Grammar practice
- Read the complete poem. Read it once for the overall situation and again to notice details. Avoid deciding what it means from the title alone.
- Paraphrase its movement. Write a brief account of what happens or changes in each stanza. This gives you a reliable base before interpreting imagery or themes.
- Identify the speaker and audience. Ask who seems to be speaking, who is being addressed, and what the speaker’s attitude appears to be. Treat these as interpretations to support with the poem, not assumptions.
- Mark significant choices. Notice imagery, diction, sound, repetition, structure, and changes in tone. Select details that help explain the poem rather than listing techniques without purpose.
- Support each interpretation with textual evidence. Connect your explanation to particular words, phrases, or lines. State how the detail shapes meaning or tone.
- Practise the question style you will face. Use your teacher’s guidance and official examination materials, and compare your responses with the guide’s examples where relevant.
How to check which poems are prescribed this year
The DBE resource listings confirm the subject resources and the guide’s title, but the pages cited here do not verify an individual current prescribed-poem list. A list from an older circular or setwork document should not be assumed to apply to the current examination year.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
Rank #3
- Ask your Sesotho Home Language teacher for the list issued for your examination year.
- If you need to verify it independently, check the relevant provincial examination authority’s current instructions or circular and confirm the year and subject.
- Use Melodi ya Dithothokiso alongside the poems actually assigned to your class; do not infer the current set poems from the guide’s existence or title.
