Serena Williams publicly supported Taylor Swift after some spectators booed the singer when she appeared on the stadium videoboards during Super Bowl LIX. Williams also made a surprise appearance in Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show.
What happened when Taylor Swift appeared on the videoboards?
Super Bowl LIX was played in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. Swift attended to support the Kansas City Chiefs and her partner, tight end Travis Kelce. During a first-quarter break, Swift and Ice Spice appeared on the stadium videoboards, and some people in the crowd booed. The Associated Press reported that Swift gave a side-eye and wrinkled her nose; TIME described a side-eye and laugh. Those reports describe what viewers could see, not what Swift was thinking or feeling.

The Eagles went on to defeat the Chiefs 40–22, according to the Associated Press’s February 9, 2025 report. The score is game context, not a measure of the crowd’s reaction.
What did Serena Williams say about Taylor Swift?
During the game, Williams posted a message supporting Swift. Fox News reproduced it as: “I love you @taylorswift13 dont listen to those booo!!” The wording and punctuation here follow that outlet’s reproduction; it is attributed to Williams’s post as reported by Fox News on February 10, 2025.

Why did some spectators boo?
There is no established single explanation for each person who booed. The AP reported that some sports fans had grown frustrated with the amount of NFL television coverage Swift received, while the Chiefs had become a team many fans loved to hate. Swift also grew up near Philadelphia but was supporting Kansas City. These factors help explain the atmosphere described in coverage, but they do not prove any individual spectator’s motive or establish that the booing came only from Eagles fans.

Williams also appeared during Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance. The U.S. Open’s February 10, 2025 account notes both her cameo and her earlier support for Swift after some spectators booed the singer on the jumbotron.
