Sam Raimi makes that reversal the engine of a darkly comic survival thriller, then pushes it into horror, gore and pulp absurdity. The result is more satisfying as a volatile power struggle than as a sustained workplace satire.
What is Send Help about?
Directed and produced by Sam Raimi, Send Help stars Rachel McAdams as Linda Liddle, an overlooked employee at a consulting firm, and Dylan O’Brien as Bradley Preston, her arrogant boss. After their plane crashes, the pair are stranded together on an island. The screenplay is by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift; Zainab Azizi is also a producer, according to The Walt Disney Company.
The setup asks a clean, instantly legible question: what if you were stranded on an island with your bad boss? Linda’s survival skills and Bradley’s dependence on her turn the workplace hierarchy upside down. The island gives Linda’s competence a value her office did not, while Bradley’s title offers little help when he is no longer in charge of the conditions around him.
How does the power reversal work?
The film’s sharpest comic idea is not simply that Linda is better prepared. It is that Bradley’s confidence in his authority cannot survive the change in circumstances. The Guardian describes Linda as a skilled researcher who was passed over for promotion; The Atlantic notes that her interest in Survivor becomes useful after the crash. Those details give her apparent preparedness a satisfying connection to the life she had before the island, rather than making the shift feel like a sudden new identity.

That reversal also changes how viewers read the two characters. Linda is no longer defined only by how her workplace treats her, and Bradley has to confront the gap between his status and his actual usefulness. The tension comes from watching dependence turn into leverage—and from wondering whether Linda will use that leverage to restore a balance or to claim power for herself.
Does the workplace satire hold up as horror takes over?
Not consistently, and that divide is central to the film’s appeal. The Walt Disney Company describes Send Help as a psychological survival thriller. The Guardian sees a black comedy and island parable whose satire is weakened by the later gore and violence. The Atlantic, by contrast, embraces it as a horror-comedy with violent silliness. These are meaningfully different responses to the same tonal choice: Raimi does not keep the story in the lane of a workplace comedy.

The violence can make the power struggle feel more dangerous, but it also changes what the film is asking the audience to enjoy. The opening reversal invites recognition—the fantasy of a bad boss discovering that authority does not equal competence. As the story moves toward increasingly outrageous horror, that familiar grievance becomes less important than the shock and spectacle. Viewers looking for an escalating workplace parable may find the gore distracts from the idea; viewers who want a pulpier ride may find the excess is precisely the point.
How do McAdams and O’Brien fit the material?
McAdams is the strongest anchor for the film’s shifting balance. The Guardian praises her performance even while criticizing the later turns, and The Atlantic considers her an apt lead for the horror-comedy. She gives Linda enough practical focus to make the survival reversal credible, while leaving room for the character’s changing relationship to control to remain unsettling rather than purely triumphant.

O’Brien’s Bradley is built around the mismatch between his self-image and his circumstances. The Atlantic describes the performance as suited to the character. His presence helps keep the island’s struggle from becoming a simple story of a competent heroine and a helpless antagonist: Bradley remains an active force in the contest, even when he is the one who needs help.
Is Send Help a theatrical experience or a realistic survival story?
Raimi has described the film as something designed for a shared audience response. In an interview with TheWrap, he said, “I don’t mean to be a snob but I’m designing this as an audience experience. I wanted the interaction of the theater to make it work, because I know that flavor, and I need that.” The Walt Disney Company article quotes him describing the intended effect: “That’s why we’re in this — to give the audience a thrill. I hope the movie stirs people’s imaginations and causes them to talk about ‘what if.’”

That aim helps explain why realism is not the only useful measure. The remote-island premise invites viewers to weigh survival plausibility, but Raimi’s stated priority is an audience reacting together to the film’s shocks and reversals. The story’s best question is less about whether every turn is realistic than about how quickly a familiar social hierarchy can become meaningless when the circumstances change.

Send Help opened theatrically in the United States on January 30, 2026. The Guardian listed January 29 for Australia and February 5 for the United Kingdom. These are territory-specific release dates, not a single worldwide opening.
Best Value
TheWrap reported that the film’s opening weekend brought in $28 million worldwide, including more than $20 million domestically and more than $8 million overseas. Those are TheWrap’s reported figures in its February 4, 2026 interview article, rather than independently verified totals.
Verdict
Send Help has a strong, accessible hook and a lead performance that makes Linda’s growing control worth watching. Its tonal shift is also its main risk: the more the film leans into gore and violent pulp, the less room remains for the workplace satire that makes the premise sting. The Guardian’s reservations about the twists and excess are persuasive, even if The Atlantic’s appreciation of the film’s unruly horror-comedy energy captures another side of Raimi’s approach. It is best approached as a dark, increasingly outrageous survival story—not as a grounded office drama or a neat revenge fantasy.
