The band also said the song is about “joy and possibilities and hope.”
How the White House used “Closing Time”
The White House posted a social-media video showing a shackled man being patted down at an airport, set to Semisonic’s 1998 song. The video used the lyric, “You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here.” U.S. Customs and Border Protection reposted it with the caption, “It’s closing time. We are making America safe again.” The Associated Press reported the White House post and the band’s response; The Guardian covered the video, CBP repost and administration response.
What Semisonic said about permission and the song’s meaning
In a statement reported by the Associated Press, Semisonic said: “We did not authorize or condone the White House’s use of our song in any way. And no, they didn’t ask. The song is about joy and possibilities and hope, and they have missed the point entirely.” The statement was made on behalf of the band; the report does not attribute it to an individual member.
That is the band’s account of authorization and its interpretation of the song. It is not a court ruling, and the reporting does not independently resolve every copyright or licensing question. The Washington Post also reported that the administration had not sought permission.

How the White House explained the message
Asked about the post, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “our entire government clearly is leaning into the message of this president.” The Guardian’s account also reports her explanation of the video’s use of the lyric. The White House’s messaging, the band’s objection and the question of permission are distinct parts of the story: the official explanation does not change what Semisonic said about its consent.
Where the song fits in Semisonic’s history
“Closing Time” appeared on Semisonic’s 1998 album Feeling Strangely Fine. The Associated Press reported that the album reached No. 43 on the Billboard 200, while the song reached No. 4 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart and earned a Grammy nomination for best rock song. Those are historical achievements reported in 2025, not current chart positions.
