What is Self Reliance about?
Tommy is invited into a limousine by actor Andy Samberg and offered a chance to win a million dollars by taking part in a dark-web reality show. The contestants are hunted for 30 days. The game’s central rule is that Tommy cannot be killed while he is not entirely alone, so he tries to recruit other people to help him survive. This is the premise described in Hulu’s synopsis.
Jake Johnson’s role behind the camera
Johnson not only plays Tommy: he wrote and directed Self Reliance. The SXSW 2023 festival announcement credits him as director and screenwriter. Hulu also lists him as a producer, alongside Ali Bell and Joe Hardesty; executive producers include Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone.
