“A Thousand Yards,” which aired April 15, 2024, was the NCIS franchise’s 1,000th original episode—not the flagship series’ 1,000th. It was episode 464 of NCIS. The first-look preview offers a behind-the-scenes view of the milestone, while the episode itself brings a past enemy to the fore and gives Director Vance a chance to address his estrangement from his son.

Why the episode counts as number 1,000
CBS counted aired episodes across five series to reach the franchise milestone: NCIS, NCIS: Hawai‘i, NCIS: Sydney, NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans. “A Thousand Yards” was the flagship NCIS series’ 464th episode. The two numbers refer to different counts.
| Milestone | What it counts |
|---|---|
| 1,000th episode | Combined aired episodes across the five NCIS series, as counted by CBS in 2024 |
| 464th episode | Episodes of the flagship NCIS series, as counted by CBS in 2024 |
In its April 2, 2024 announcement, CBS estimated that watching all 1,000 episodes consecutively without breaks would take 42,722 minutes—just under 30 days. That is CBS’s illustrative calculation, not an independently verified viewing-time measurement. The same release reported more than 4 trillion minutes of U.S. viewing over 20 years, and distribution in 200 markets and more than 60 languages.

What happens in “A Thousand Yards”
CBS’s official synopsis says that NCIS comes under attack by a mysterious enemy from its past. At the same time, Director Vance tries to mend fences with his estranged son and explain why he remains at NCIS. The two storylines put a franchise-scale threat alongside a personal conflict for Vance.
Daniela Ruah and Vanessa Lachey make special appearances. CBS does not describe the episode as a full crossover, so their appearances should not be mistaken for confirmation of one. Christopher Waild, an executive producer, wrote the episode; Diana Valentine directed it.
