Where and when the 2025 ESPYS took place
The ESPYS ceremony was held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. ESPN Press Room said the show aired live on ABC and streamed on ESPN+, with comedian, actor and writer Shane Gillis as host. TV Insider described the ceremony as a celebration of athletic achievement and contributions to sports.

Suni Lee: gold leaves and a dramatic slit
Vogue identified Lee’s dress as Oscar de la Renta, adorned with gold leaves and cut with a dramatic slit. The gold detailing gave the look a clear point of focus, while the slit added movement. Lee also won Best Comeback Athlete at the ceremony.

Jordan Chiles: a sculptural Cong Tri dress
Chiles wore a playful Cong Tri dress with a dome-cupped corset and flared skirt, according to Vogue. Its shaped bodice and outward-sweeping skirt make it one of the night’s more architectural silhouettes.
Simone Biles: a custom Athleta gown by Zac Posen
Vogue identified Biles’s gown as a custom Athleta design by Zac Posen, Gap’s creative director. Marie Claire reports that Posen drew inspiration from Biles’s favorite Athleta Transcend Open-Back T-shirt, adapting the familiar open-back idea into a red-carpet gown. Marie Claire also reported that Athleta had not previously made a red-carpet gown.

Comfort was part of the design’s appeal for Biles. In an interview with Marie Claire, she said: “I know it’s going to be comfortable, and that’s my favorite part.” She explained that she wanted to be comfortable while walking the carpet, sitting and chatting—not only while posing for photographs.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: Ferragamo tailoring
Vogue described Gilgeous-Alexander’s look as a herringbone, double-breasted tailored coat with a matching suit from Ferragamo’s fall 2025 collection. Vogue credited Yashua Simmons as his stylist. Compared with the gowns’ embellishment and shape, the herringbone texture and double-breasted cut made this a statement through tailoring.

Ilona Maher: a plunging black dress
Vogue described Maher’s dress as black and plunging, with a cut that exposed the midriff. The clean color made the neckline and silhouette the defining features. Maher received Best Breakthrough Athlete at the ceremony.
Gabby Thomas: PatBO
Vogue identified Thomas in PatBO, and TV Insider included her in its photo gallery. The cited coverage does not establish further garment details, so the designer attribution is the limit of what can be said about her look here.

How the looks differed
The strongest contrast is in silhouette and surface: Lee’s gold-leaf Oscar de la Renta gown and Chiles’s corset-and-flared-skirt design use ornament or structure to make an immediate statement; Biles’s custom gown turns an athletic-wear reference into formalwear; and Gilgeous-Alexander’s herringbone suit relies on texture and precise tailoring. What “best dressed” means—and whether these looks are available to buy
The phrase refers to editors’ selections and red-carpet coverage, not an official ESPYS honor. The named outfits include custom work and pieces attributed to designer collections. The cited coverage does not establish whether any of these exact garments are currently available at retail, nor does it verify affordable copies. A black formal dress may be a broad style analogue to Maher’s look, but it should not be presented as the garment she wore.
