Gene Hackman’s screen image shifted from a young character actor in Bonnie and Clyde to the stern lawman of Unforgiven and the eccentric patriarch of The Royal Tenenbaums. These selected photo galleries trace those changes through film stills, portraits and public appearances; they are retrospectives, not a complete photographic record.
Browse the AP photo gallery and The Guardian’s “life in pictures” alongside the timeline below. Captions distinguish a film’s release year from a photograph’s date and an awards ceremony’s year.
Early breakthrough: Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Bonnie and Clyde gave Hackman a career-making early role as Buck Barrow, the older brother of Clyde Barrow. A still from the film offers a glimpse of the character actor before he became an instantly recognizable leading presence.
Recognition arrives: The French Connection (1971–72)
As New York detective Popeye Doyle in The French Connection (1971), Hackman brought a forceful, rough-edged energy to the screen. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the role at the 44th ceremony in 1972; the ceremony year is not the film’s release year. The Academy’s 1972 ceremony record lists the award. AP’s gallery also includes an interview photograph dated March 24, 1972, a portrait rather than a film still.

A decade of range: 1972–75
Hackman moved among very different screen worlds: the disaster drama The Poseidon Adventure (1972), the road film Scarecrow (1973), and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Conversation (1974), in which he played a surveillance expert. He returned as Popeye Doyle in French Connection II (1975). Seen in sequence, these roles show how quickly his image could shift from authority figure to isolated observer.
Lex Luthor: Superman and Superman II
Hackman’s Lex Luthor made him a memorable comic-book villain for a new audience. The first Superman film was released in 1978; a Guardian gallery image identified with Superman II is dated 1980. Keeping those dates distinct helps place the photographs rather than treating them as interchangeable images from a single production.

In Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven (1992), Hackman played Little Bill Daggett, a brutal sheriff. The performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 65th ceremony in 1993. The Academy’s 1993 ceremony record confirms the win; the film’s year remains 1992.
Late-career portrait: The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Wes Anderson’s The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) recast Hackman as Royal, a charismatic, troublesome family patriarch. Its distinctive look provides a striking late-career contrast with the hard-edged detectives and lawmen of his earlier films.
