On the way, the rescuers also crossed paths with Jay Leno and his friends—but Leno had not seen Yang and did not take part in the search.
How Mr. Yang went missing
Mr. Yang became separated from his hiking group in Angeles National Forest. An Entertainment Weekly report republished by AOL, dated August 23, 2024, described him as experienced, fit and prepared. He was reported missing at 3 p.m. on a Saturday.
Montrose, Sierra Madre and Altadena search-and-rescue teams searched for 12 hours without finding him. The San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team joined the effort on Sunday morning.
Why Jay Leno was part of the story
After completing an assignment, the San Dimas team stopped at Newcomb’s Ranch. Leno and friends had rendezvoused there for a drive. They had not seen Yang; the encounter was incidental, not part of the rescue.
