At its Friday, July 26, 2024, Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Doctor Who showed an exclusive three-minute preview clip from its upcoming Christmas special, later titled “Joy to the World.” Nicola Coughlan introduced the clip in a video message. It featured the Fifteenth Doctor offering a ham and cheese toastie and a pumpkin spice latte at different points in Earth’s history, before Joy’s hotel room encounter with a Silurian—and the Doctor.
What did the SDCC first look show?
The preview jumped between moments in Earth’s history, with Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor offering people a ham and cheese toastie and a pumpkin spice latte. It then followed Joy, played by Nicola Coughlan, as she checked into a London hotel in 2024. A Silurian entered her room, followed by the Doctor.
Those are beats from the three-minute preview, not a complete recap of the episode. The clip was introduced by Coughlan in a video message during the panel. She said, “I am thrilled to be joining Doctor Who for the Christmas special this year, and I am so excited for you to meet my character, Joy.”
What is the Christmas special called, and who stars in it?
The special is titled “Joy to the World.” Gatwa plays the Doctor, and Coughlan plays Joy. Steven Moffat wrote and executive produced the episode; Alex Sanjiv Pillai directed it. Russell T Davies served as showrunner and executive producer.

How does the official synopsis expand on the clip?
The distributor’s synopsis begins with Joy checking into a London hotel in 2024, then adds that she opens a secret doorway to the Time Hotel. There she encounters danger, dinosaurs, and the Doctor, while a deadly plan unfolds across Earth in time for Christmas. The synopsis gives the broader premise; it does not establish that every detail appeared in the Comic-Con clip.
